Learning Support

Our Mission

The mission of NLU’s Office of Learning Support is to offer proactive academic assistance for students by providing in-person/online tutoring in writing and math, cooperating with faculty to support student learning, and advocating for equitable educational access.

Who We Are

We, the Office of Learning Support, provide individualized services designed to achieve maximum student learning potential at the postsecondary level. By integrating National Louis University’s mission and values into our approach, we provide a structured support system that promotes access for all students. We reinforce this system by guiding students to become self-sufficient learners through integrative academic support, including tutoring and workshops. Our staff possesses expertise in current learning theory, subject matter knowledge, and best instructional practices to support a variety of learners. We apply this expertise to enhance student learning outcomes and academic success.

Location and Hours

The NLU Learning Specialists are located at the Chicago campus in room 6035.
Learning Specialists are available to meet by appointment at the Chicago campus library, located on the sixth floor in room 6003, at the following days and times:

  • Mondays-Thursdays: 9am-6pm
  • Fridays: 9am-5pm
  • Saturday 9am-1pm

Tutoring is also provided at the Lisle and Wheeling campuses. On the Request an Appointment form you can indicate your preferred location.

Learning Specialists can also meet with students virtually via Zoom video conference on the days/hours indicated above by appointment. If you would like to meet via Zoom, please indicate that preference on the Request an Appointment form. You will receive a calendar invite with a link to your appointment and a tutorial on Zoom.

1:1 Tutoring Sessions

Learning Specialists provide tutoring, free of charge, for all NLU students. Learning Specialist are content experts in the following subjects:

  • Writing (grammar, usage, mechanics, style, organization, and citations)
  • Math (algebra, statistics, probability, and geometry)
  • Science (biology, physical science, and environmental science)
  • Technology (D2L, Word, and Excel)

1:1 tutoring appointments are normally an hour long. During your appointment, a Learning Specialist will help you build the academic skills necessary to succeed in your courses. You may also receive additional study strategies and coaching to reinforce these academic skills. Our Learning Specialists will be your mentor and advocate throughout your education at NLU.

You can schedule an appointment with a Learning Specialist in three ways:

Drop-In Hours

As an additional service, students are welcome to attend drop-in hours to meet with a Learning Specialist at the Chicago campus library without an appointment. Drop-In Hours are updated quarterly and posted here:

Mondays: 2:30-5pm

Tuesdays: 3:30-6pm

Wednesday: 2:30-5pm

Instructor Support

Aligning with our mission to offer proactive support, The Office of Learning Support is available to collaborate with instructors. A Learning Specialist can hold an in-class review session on a variety of skills, such as APA citation. In addition, a Learning Specialist is available to co-teach individual lessons with instructors to reinforce learning objectives. We can also provide consultation on best practices for supporting students in your classroom.     NLU’s Chicago campus on South Michigan Avenue occupies five floors of the historic Peoples Gas Building. This landmark building, across the street from the Art Institute of Chicago and Grant Park, is easily accessible by train, bus and car and is surrounded by restaurants, parking lots/garages and shops.

  • ELGIN

    Conveniently located in a fast-growing business district off I-90 and Route 31, NLU Elgin features 10 classrooms with high-tech media equipment; a computer lab with high-speed Internet access; two conference rooms; and comfortable student lounges. Parking is free at this recently remodeled and upgraded teaching site, which now includes wireless Internet access.

  • NORTH SHORE

    Opened in the summer of 2006, NLU North Shore at Skokie is a state-of-the-art modern campus located just off the Edens Expressway near the Old Orchard Shopping Center. The campus includes 44 wireless classrooms equipped with high-tech media equipment; four computer labs with high-speed Internet access, including a walk-in lab in the library; six conference rooms; a public café for beverages and snacks; a student welcome center; a library for research and study; and multiple, comfortable student lounge areas.

  • WHEELING

    Located in one of Chicago's major northwest suburbs, the newly renovated NLU Wheeling includes 20 classrooms with high-tech media equipment, four conference rooms, four computer labs with high-speed Internet access, large student lounge areas with wireless capabilities and interactive video capabilities, and an extensive research library. The site also houses the university library research collection.
