Career Resources [+]

The AbilityOne Program 
Federal initiative to help people who are blind or have other disabilities find employment by working for nonprofit agencies that sell products/services to the U.S. Government.

American Corporate Partners (ACP) 
Free nationwide, in-person or e-mentoring, career counseling and networking with professionals for long-term career development for veterans.

America's Heroes at Work  
U.S. Department of Labor project, designed for employers and workforce development systems, addresses employment challenges with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and/or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

C.O.D.E. – Call of Duty Endowment 
Helps veterans find careers and supports organizations that provide job training and placement

Connect Vets
A national leader in providing online job search education and career transition resources for transitioning Service Members and Veterans to facilitate Military Talent Acquisition.

The Farmer-Veteran Coalition

Guide to post-military success with many career and education resources.

Helmets to Hardhats
Places veterans into building and construction careers through trade apprenticeship programs and offers specific resources for disabled veterans.

Hire Heroes USA’s (HHUSA)
Transition assistance, job search/placement services particularly for veterans of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom, with specific resources for wounded or disabled veterans.

Job Corps
U.S. Department of Labor program offering free job training and post-training assistance services with priority enrollment for veterans (and three locations that offer dorm areas exclusively for veterans)

The Veterans' Guide to Getting Hired is intended to help existing and future veterans find jobs and start new careers. They can read about finding a job, opportunities and challenges within the workplace, how businesses benefit from hiring veterans, and how vocational rehabilitation prepares veterans to find work.

Provides opportunities for veterans to serve as citizen leaders. 

National Able
National Able's "Veterans Forward" program prepares Veteran job seekers to become better job candidates, helps them navigate the new job search work model, and connects them with employers looking to hire Veterans.

Operation RE/MAX
Provides listing of RE/MAX offices that have made a commitment to hire and mentor military spouses, veterans and transitioning personnel

Return to Work
Offers vocational rehabilitation and employment services: evaluation, training, placement, service learning and supported employment.

The Office of Personnel Management in support of the President’s Veterans Employment Initiative, created a one-stop web site resource for Federal veteran employment information. The information on this site is designed to ensure veterans, transitioning service members, and their families receive accurate and consistent information regarding veteran’s employment in the Federal Government.

The Veterans Corporation
Provides veterans and service-disabled veterans with access to the tools required to become successful in business.

Veteran’s Transition Franchise Initiative
Franchise opportunities portal operated by the International Franchise Association, offering specific discounts to veterans.

The premiere military related job board on the Internet. The VetJobs website connects transitioning military personnel, veterans and their family members with organizations who are searching for highly trained, reliable and mission-oriented employees.

Allen Lynch Foundation
The Foundation's mission is to "remove road blocks" that might impede or stop the veteran from becoming a contributing and happy member of society.  

Debtors Legal Aid

Debtors Legal Aid is a non-profit legal services corporation dedicated to helping consumers enforce their right to be treated with dignity and respect in all debt related matters regardless of ability to pay.  They help consumers by presenting educational programs, advising pro se litigants, and representing consumers being sued by debt collectors.

American Bar Association
Veterans face a wide array of legal issues created by their unique circumstances. The ABA provides a list of resources designed to provide attorneys and veterans with assistance related to challenges in obtaining medical care, disability benefits, reemployment rights, consumer, housing, criminal and family law matters, and in obtaining legal counsel.

John Marshall Veterans Legal Support Center & Clinic (VLSC)
The Veterans Legal Support Center & Clinic (VLSC) works on all aspects of Veteran Benefits Administration claims, from the initial, factual intake to the technical representation of claims at the appellate level.

Free Legal Clinic

Get free legal advice about:  VA disability benefits, veterans pension, discharge upgrades, consumer law, housing law, family law, SSI/Public benfits, healthcare law, and other non-criminal legal issuess for all low-income veterans, current and former military service members.  We provide services every THIRD THURSDAY of the month from 12:00 -4:00pm.

Mental Health Resources [+]

Give an Hour

Give an Hour is a nonprofit organization that provides free mental health services to U.S. military personnel and families affected by the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. In addition to direct counseling services, providers work to reduce the stigma associated with mental health by participating in and leading education, training, and outreach effort in schools and communities and around military bases.

The Soldiers Project

The Soldiers Project provides free counseling to service members of all branches of the military, regardless of discharge status, as well as their loved ones. Services are free, confidential and unlimited. Through a network of more than 450 licensed mental health professionals, community outreach, and educational workshops for our therapists in military culture, PTSD and other psychological effects of war, The Soldiers Project has been able to help ease the transition back to civilian life for veterans and their families.

Physical Health Resources [+]

Mesothelioma Guide

Veterans make up the largest group of people diagnosed with mesothelioma because asbestos was so widely used in the military. Veterans who develop mesothelioma as a result of their service in the military are entitled to benefits and assistance from the U.S. government. Mesothelioma Guide assists Veterans in accessing financial benefits, filing claims with the VA, and providing resources to caregivers and dependents. Please visit:

Military Outreach USA

Military Outreach USA is a 501(c)3 not for profit which exists to encourage, engage, educate and equip individuals, houses of worship and organizations throughout the nation to provide a supporting role to our military community. This community is comprised of our military (active duty, guard, and reserves), veterans, and their families who are impacted by the visible and invisible wounds of military service.

Jesse Brown VA Medical Center

The primary mission of Chaplain Services is to provide for the religious/spiritual care of veteran patients and outpatients and the spiritual support of their families and significant others.

Code of Support Foundation

The Code of Support Foundation (COSF) works to engage and leverage the full spectrum of this nation's resources to our service members, veterans and their families, including advocating for clients through benefit allocation, connecting those suffering from PTSD with mental services, and providing higher education opportunities.

Down Range: A Transitioning Veteran's Career Guide to Life's Next Phase by James Murphy and William Duke

Written by veterans who have successfully made the transition, Down Range offers career planning guidance to U.S. military veterans coming off active duty. This is not simply a guide to transitioning from the military to civilian world. This book is a guide to developing a post-military career, not just for the first few days, weeks, or months after active duty, but for the rest of your employed life.

Illinois Joining Forces

Illinois Joining Forces (IJF) is a network of public and not-for-profit organizations working together to improve services to Illinois’ military and veteran communities by offering a compilation of resources ranging from legal to disability benefits to financial literacy.

Military Officers Association of America (MOAA)

A nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that works to support military officers and their families at every stage of life. MOAA plays an active role with Congress on behalf of the military community on issues that affect the career force, the retired community, and veterans of the uniformed services. They also offer a range of personal and financial services exclusive to MOAA membership.

Online College Database: Higher Education Resources for Veterans and their Families.

A free, extensive guide with links to numerous resources to help military students succeed in college. Academic, financial, social, and medical resources are highlighted. 


    NLU’s Chicago campus on South Michigan Avenue occupies five floors of the historic Peoples Gas Building.
