Veterans and Military Program

Our Mission: To provide support services for Veterans, Active duty, Reserve, National Guard service members and their immediate family members, by helping them transition into higher education.

Dr. Steve Curda, Ph.D.

Special Advisor to the President on Military Education
U.S. Army, retired

Stephen is a retired Army brigadier general with more than 30 years in service and Afghanistan.  He currently serves as the special assistant to the president for veterans and military education at National Louis University and is a faculty member of the National College of Education (NCE) Technology in Education program. Additionally, Steve served as the Director, Illinois Veteran Affairs and is the current CEO of Illinois Joining Forces (IJF).


Dr. Stacey Dixon, Ed.D.

Director, Student Veteran Service Support
U. S. Marine Corps, retired

Stacey is a retired Marine Corps veteran of twenty years.  She now serves as the director of student veteran support services since September 2018.  The previous year, she served as an AmeriCorps VISTA in the veterans resource center here at NLU.  She comes from seven years of teaching secondary education (JROTC) in Chicago charter schools.  


Chef Karl Benford

U. S. Navy, retired

Chef Karl is a retired Navy veteran after serving 20+ years in the U.S. military.  After retirement, he enrolled at Kendall College as a student in the culinary arts program. He was later hired as the field marketing chef for Kendall.  Chef Benford then transitioned over to National Louis after the acquisition of Kendall College, and works with the Veterans and Military program.  He is also a member of the Student Veterans of America Chapter at NLU/Kendall.


Sharonda Simmons

Veterans and Military Program Coordinator
AmeriCorps, VISTA

Sharonda serves as an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer with Campus Compact.  She is the coordinator for events and partnerships for the Veterans and Military Program.  Her primary role is to build partnerships with military friendly organizations to enable holistic support to our student veterans and military-affiliated community.  Ms. Simmons is also a recent graduate of NLU.


Vanice Suh

Vanice is Marine Corps veteran who is currently pursuing her Masters degree in Public Administration.  She has worked extensively with veterans and military-affiliated students in positions with the Veterans Administration.  As one of the coordinators, she is instrumental in fulfilling the administrative and logistics of the veterans resource center, and assisting our student veterans with their requests and needs. She is also an active member of the NLU SVA chapter. 


Rome Jefferson McEntee

Rome is an undergraduate student majoring in Human Services and Psychology at National Louis University. He has served as the veterans resource center coordinator since April 2018, bringing continuity and sustainment to the center.  As one of the coordinators, he ensures our student veterans needs are supported.





    NLU’s Chicago campus on South Michigan Avenue occupies five floors of the historic Peoples Gas Building. This landmark building, across the street from the Art Institute of Chicago and Grant Park, is easily accessible by train, bus and car and is surrounded by restaurants, parking lots/garages and shops.
