NLU Month of Service Volunteer Opportunities

Throughout the month of May staff, faculty and alumni are invited to contribute four hours during the work week to serve in various ways throughout their communities. If individually, a team of colleagues or your department are looking for volunteer opportunities, please see the list below. If you have a volunteer opportunity you would like to have added to the list, or you are volunteering at an organization not listed, please email connection@nl.edu with the details. USO Drive
As part of NLU’s Month of Service, we are hosting a Care Package Drive for USO of Illinois. Care packages are an excellent way to support the military and improve the morale of service members stationed overseas. Monetary donations are needed to purchase items and for shipping and handling. To provide a monetary donation, click here to complete the online donation form. Please select the "Honor/Memorial box" and enter "in honor of National Louis University".

Hygiene Kit Drive
Help Student Experience reach their goal of 200 hygiene kit donations to their local charities: YWCA, Cornerstone Community Outreach and Journeys — The Road Home.

For baby:
lotion, shampoo, conditioner, body wash and baby powder.

For adults:
bar of soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, lotion, shampoo and conditioner.

Chicago: the donation box will be located on the 2nd floor lobby next to the elevators.
Lisle: the donation box will be located by front desk, see Patti.
Wheeling: the donation box will be located on the 1st floor lobby next to the elevators.

Clothing Drive
Student Experience will host a spring clothing drive for New Summer Clothes Newborn–20 years.

Chicago: the donation box will be located on the 2nd floor lobby next to the elevators or in Student Experience on the 6th floor.
Lisle: the donation box will be located by front desk, see Patti.
Wheeling: the donation box will be located by the elevators on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd floor.

Metropolitan Ministries
A grassroots, donor and volunteer-fueled community nonprofit. Hope is our goal, but it cannot be measured. We care for the homeless and those at risk of becoming homeless in our community through services that alleviate suffering, promote dignity and instill self-sufficiency. 

Metropolitan Ministries will be America’s most effective caregiver to poor and homeless people.

Our programs will be known for their compassion and innovation in helping struggling families and individuals achieve their highest potential for self-sufficiency.

Misericordia

Where: 6300 N. Ridge Ave. • Chicago, IL 60660

Misericordia offers a community of care that maximizes potential for persons with mild to profound developmental disabilities, many of whom are also physically challenged. By serving society’s most vulnerable citizens, Misericordia also serves the families who want the best for them yet cannot provide it at home. Lend a helping hand at Misericordia for the day. Volunteers will be split into pairs to help out in the arts and crafts room, bakery, cleaning, assisting residents in daily chores, and various other projects.

Greater Chicago Food Depository

Where: 4100 W. Ann Lurie Place • Chicago, IL 60632

The greater Chicago food depository distributes over 154,000 meals each day. They have one mission: that no one should go hungry. Join the army of volunteers that are in support of this mission by sorting and packing up shelf stable food and passing it out to the families in need. This activity will require long pants and covered shoulders, minimal jewelry, tennis shoes, or steel toe boots. Be prepared to tie back long hair, stand for 90 minutes at a time, and cover any exposed tattoos. Be prepared to lift up to 10 lbs.

Feed My Starving Children

Where: 1072 National Parkway • Schaumburg, IL 60173

Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) is a Christian non-profit organization committed to feeding God's children hungry in body and spirit. The approach is simple: volunteers hand-pack meals specially formulated for malnourished children, and we send them to partners around the world where they're used to operate orphanages, schools, clinics and feeding programs to break the cycle of poverty. 

Midwest Palliative and Hospice Care Center

Where: 2050 Claire Ct. • Glenview, IL 60025

The residents and their families at Midwest Palliative and Hospice Care Center are in need of no-sew fleece blankets. Volunteers will be responsible for gathering all necessary items for the project. Blankets can be made ahead of time and dropped off or they can be made as an on-site project. Blankets are needed in all sizes from infant/toddler to adult.

Ronald McDonald House Chicago

Where: 211 E. Grand Avenue • Chicago, IL

The Ronald McDonald House provides temporary house and care for children with complex medical needs by providing comfort, compassion, and a sense of community. Families stay for as long as needed for absolutely no cost. What makes a home away from home? Fresh baked cookies. Take over the kitchen at the Ronald McDonald House and bake a batch of fresh baked cookies for children and their caretakers. Group is responsible for bringing their own ingredients and collaborating on the recipe. Please be conscious of nut allergies.
