NLU Opens Gage Building

Located at 18 S. Michigan Ave

National Louis is excited to grow and add to the downtown Chicago campus.  Starting Fall 2019, there is a second building at this campus, 18 S. Michigan Avenue, also known as the Gage Building. Located just one block north of the 122 S. Michigan Avenue building, this new building opens this fall for classes, and is also home to several NLU colleges and offices. 

Finding your classroom at the Chicago campus

Check your schedule to find the right building:

  • Rooms indicated by 18-XXX are located at 18 S. Michigan Avenue, the Gage Building
  • Rooms indicated by 122-XXX are located at 122 S. Michigan Avenue

Accessing 18 S. Michigan Avenue

The entrance to the building is marked by a National Louis sign above the revolving doors. The entrance can be found between Acanto Restaurant and Shake Shack. In order to have access to the building, you must show your NLU ID to the security desk immediately inside the door.  Floors 2-5 are being used by NLU in the fall term.

Using space at 18 S. Michigan Avenue

Lounge space can be found on floors 2-5 during the fall term and is open to all NLU students.  The 3rd floor lounge is part of the University Library, and a quiet study space.  During the term, additional student life space will be opened on the 5th floor.

Colleges and Departments  located at 18 S. Michigan Avenue

2nd Floor: National College of Education

Faculty and administrative offices for the National College of Education can be found on the 2nd floor, including the office of the dean.  NCE  is one of the oldest and most respected schools of education in the country. Our programs are designed for people who want to improve their own prospects as well as those of their students and communities, and the home of undergraduate and graduate programs in Education.

 3rd Floor: The University Library

The University Library at Chicago has moved to the 3rd floor of the Gage Building. We are now offering an expanded print collection brought by combining the Chicago and North Shore libraries. We are also excited to share our popular book collection with lots of fun new titles and interesting reads. The Library continues to offer a wide variety of resources, both online and in-person, to students, staff, and faculty. This includes our online databases, digital journals, streaming videos, and more. In addition, we have librarians on hand to provide research consultations, class visits, and many other forms of academic support. Be sure to check out the Archives and Special Collections as well, also located on the 3rd floor of the Gage building. The Archives and Special Collections documents history of National Louis University and its relationship to the Kindergarten Movement in Chicago. These materials are made available to the NLU community and to the general public and includes University documents such as yearbooks, course catalogs, historic photographs, and Elizabeth Harrison’s papers (founder and first president), among many other materials. The book collections include the rare and historic book collection, Elizabeth Harrison’s personal library, the Weinstein Historic Children’s Literature collection, the President’s collection, and the Historic Culinary collection, which are non-circulating but available for reference. The archives are available by appointment Monday- Friday, 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. For more information or to make an appointment, contact lib.archives@nl.edu.

4th Floor: College of Professional Studies and Advancement

Faculty and administrative offices of the College of Professional Studies and Advancement can be found on the second floor. This includes the office of the dean.  CPSA is home to the Schools of Management and Business, Health and Human Services, and Social and Behavioral Sciences, as well as the Illinois School of Professional Psychology.

5th Floor: Kendall College of Hospitality Management, the PACE program, and a Computer Lab

The Kendall College Hospitality Management program will move to 18 S. Michigan Avenue starting in the fall term, followed by the Culinary Arts programs in Winter 2019.  Faculty in the Hospitality department will have offices on the 5th floor starting in September, and student services staff in Career Bridge, Advising and Student Life will provide services to students on this floor during the fall term.

The Path to Academics, Community and Employment (PACE) will be located at 18 S. Michigan Avenue, including all faculty and staff offices, as well as student space.  The PACE staff will assist students in learning about the new space this fall.

    NLU’s Chicago campus on South Michigan Avenue occupies five floors of the historic Peoples Gas Building. This landmark building, across the street from the Art Institute of Chicago and Grant Park, is easily accessible by train, bus and car and is surrounded by restaurants, parking lots/garages and shops.
