Past Service Trips

NLU-NOLA Annual Service Trips

In July/August 2016, PIES leads a service team this summer to the Vision of Sci Academy. There is a focus on achievement, respect, responsibility perseverance, teamwork and enthusiasm. We will work to create a community garden by developing an open area into a garden for learning and community development. In addition, we will help educators prepare for the first day of school by assisting in classroom, organizing libraries and completing various other tasks that will make the new school year a success. We will also gain an appreciation for New Orleans people, culture and history. Pictures will be posted after the trip.

In August 2015, PIES led a service team to assist community organizers who work with children and teachers at local schools in the Treme Parish, Louisiana. Members of the team are professionals in the field of education, as well as volunteers dedicated to quality educational experiences for children. The Treme Community Center serves both children and adults in this historic neighborhood, known for being the birth place of Jazz Great, Louis Armstrong. Highlights from this past trip to New Orleans '15.

Service trip to Genola Community Center & Head Start School in Genola, Utah

Genola, Utah, lies just 60 miles south of Salt Lake City amid a stretch of land surrounded by foothills, marshy regions and mountain-fed lakes. Federal Head Start childcare programs serve children all year round. In the summer months, migrant farm workers arrive in Genola to work the summer harvest. Genola Migrant Head Start Center cares for the children of the migrant workers. The school serves a bi-lingual population. Genola Migrant Head Start Center cares for children from newborn to 5 years of age.

We served this community in June 2016 by helping teachers prepare the center’s environment so they may better serve the families and children who utilize this center. Here are what some of the volunteers said about their experiences:

"It has been a few years since I've been able to take a trip with the wonderful volunteers of PIES.  As the leader of the Utah trip this year, it was truly and honor to work with a group of passionate individuals.  This trip helped to reaffirm my passion for volunteer work in the field of education.  I will most certainly be joining PIES on another trip!" -Tiffany Vazquez
"I enjoyed my trip to Utah. It was the first time I flight by myself. At the school where we volunteered I liked painting the play house for the kids. Professionally I am happy that I went on this trip and I have good memories from the trip too. I am happy that I volunteered too. Yes I am going on another trip. I might be going to New Orleans next year." -Ashley Lindquist

We worked with the teachers who serve the children of the summer migrant laborers who travel to work in the fruit fields during the spring and summer picking seasons. The work consisted of organizing books and materials for teachers and children, with some attention to the outdoor space. Below are pictures from the 2015 trip:
