Overall Roles and Responsibilities
In order to provide a positive and enriching experience for everyone involved in the internship program, each party -Students, On-Site Employer Supervisors, the Career Bridge Team, and Faculty Internship Supervisors- should understand their expected roles and responsibilties.

Student Intern Responsibilities
  • Students should read the Internship General Policies before applying/selecting an internship to make sure it meets academic standards.
  • Students should begin their internship search one full academic year in advance to ensure an internship will be obtained by the beginning of the internship course. Handshake, NLU’s new employer database offers hundreds of internships so make sure to check posted opportunities at nl.joinhandshake.com. Employers also recruit interns early on. Career Bridge hosts an Internship Expo in the Fall.
  • Once an internship is obtained, students should submit the following information on Handshake to register their internship for credit before the course begins.
    • Log onto Handshake at nl.joinhandshake.com
    • On the top of the page, click on the Career Center Tab and scroll down to Experience
    • Click on "Request an Experience".
    • Select Experience Type and complete the internship details.
    • Click on the green "Request Experience" tab at the bottom.
    • You will then be led to an overview page listing your application answers.
    • An Internship Manager will then review your request and continue the approval process.
On-Site Employer Supervisor Responsibilities
  • One person should be designated to serve as the On-Site Employer Supervisor and complete the required evaluations and track hours.
  • The On-Site Employer Supervisor must understand that interns are earning academic credit and consequently must perform duties that apply or expand skills or knowledge learned at National Louis University.
  • The On-Site Employer Supervisor will confirm the intern’s details in Handshake, NLU's employment database.
  • The On-Site Employer Supervisor should meet regularly with the intern to evaluate the intern’s progress and to assess the appropriateness of the intern’s duties. Regular updates to National Louis University’s Career Bridge Internship Coordinator or Employer Relations Manager are always welcomed and appreciated. Updates will then be shared with Faculty Internship Supervisor and intern.
  • At the mid-point and end of the internship, the On-Site Employer Supervisor will be sent a Mid-Point and Final Evaluation and should complete it within one week. It is a great learning experience to gain feedback as often as needed, but especially as these evaluations have been completed. If you would like to discuss the feedback with a member of the Employer Relations Team or direct faculty course instructors, simply reach out to the Internship Systems Manager, or direct faculty course instructors, reach out tot eh Career Bridge at National Louis University (careerbridge@nl.edu or 312-261-3270) and a member of the team will follow up with you.
  • The On-Site Employer Supervisor will inform the Internship Coordinator immediately with concerns and/or intern termination.
National Louis University Internal Support for Interns
  • Career Advisors and Coaches- assist students with their search (resume reviews, mock interviews, and exploration of internships of interest).
  • Students can also select to meet with a Career Bridge Career Advisor for internship search assistance, but it is recommended that students initiate this no less than two quarters in advance to increase options.
  • Employer Relations Managers-connect students to related opportunities and employers. Will provide referrals.
  • Internship Systems Manager- reviews and approves all internship details, as well as, administers all internship assessments and evaluations. Point person to assist employers at any point during internship.
  • Faculty Internship Supervisor- teaches internship course and meets weekly with interns to assess learning and provide support. Faculty Internship Supervisors are assigned to students based on either their academic or professional interest.
