Internship Guidelines
Internships taken for credit at National Louis University are off-campus learning experiences integrated into the academic program. Although the specific nature of internship experiences will vary, internships are intended to expand the academic and professional knowledge through an experiential learning opportunity.

General Policies
  • Internships must apply or expand skills or knowledge learned at National Louis University.
  • The bulk of the internship work is to be at the site of the internship, where the intern is gaining experience with organizations, industry and people, and where the intern is under the supervision of one person.
  • Virtual internships (majority of hours offsite) may be obtained on a case by case basis with prior approval from assigned faculty and chair before course begins.
  • To prevent any potential conflicts of interest, students must disclose any familial relationships with employees of the organization where they wish to intern. No student may intern for a company owned or managed, fully or in part, by a family member. The on-site supervisor may not be a member of the intern's family or anyone working under the supervision of a family member.
  • Continuation of part-time or summer jobs may not serve as internships without prior approval from assigned faculty and chair before course begins.
  • National Louis University allows and encourages paid internships.
Hours Required
  • Students completing for-credit internships do so simultaneously with an Internship Course to support and develop key learning occurring at their internship sites. Each internship is worth five academic credits which requires a total of 150 hours over a period of 10 weeks (minimum 10 hours per week at their internship site for a total of 100 hours plus 5 hours per week in their internship course for a total of 50 hours). *Students completing an internship within Kendall College at National Louis University have different hours requirements.  Please contact the Career Bridge for more details.
  • Students may choose to work additional hours per week, but need to continue the duration of 10 weeks to ensure adequate time to work on multiple projects and have assignments and skills thoroughly evaluated.
  • Sites are asked not to overly extend hours per week to ensure students maintain other academic commitments.
  • Students typically intern 2-3 days per week, which should be discussed and agreed upon with the internship site before academic quarter and internships begin.
