Summer Reading Improvement Program

Intensive one-on-one support tailored to meet each student's individual needs.

The Reading Center at National Louis University will be offering an individualized summer reading program for students entering grades one through twelve at the Lisle and North Shore campuses.  Students enrolled in this program receive diagnostic testing and one-to-one tutoring in reading and writing one hour per day, four mornings per week.  Licensed teachers who are completing their graduate degrees to become Reading Specialists tutor the children under the supervision of a university professor.

Program Information

Dates:  Monday, July 1 through Thursday August 1, 2019.  Children must attend each day for all five weeks.  See informational flyers below for details on dates and times of sessions.

Fees:   $350.00, payable in advance.  In addition, we require a separate attendance deposit of $150.00 that will be returned to you if your child attends all but one session.  Both checks will be refunded should you withdraw your application prior to April 19, 2019. Withdrawals after April 19th will result in forfeiture of $350 program fee.

Note:   Because this is a teaching program for our graduate teachers, we can only accept students who will be able to attend all of the five-week sessions.  Do not submit the application if you are planning a trip or have other expectations for missing sessions.  The attendance deposit of $150.00 will not be refunded if more than one session is missed.

Program Application

How to Apply:

1.  Click on the link to the SRP parent application: https://www.nl.edu/readingcenter/srpparentapplication/. Complete and submit the entire parent portion of the application.

2.  Write two separate checks payable to National Louis University: $350.00 for the program fee and $150.00 for the attendance deposit.  If you have more than one child applying for the program, please send separate checks for each child. On the check memo line write: Reading Program and your child’s name. Mail the checks to:

                                                Dr. Mary Hoch, Director

                                                The Reading Center

                                                National Louis University

                                                850 Warrenville Road

                                                Lisle, IL 60532-1356

3. Send the link for the SRP school application to your child’s teacher: https://www.nl.edu/readingcenter/srpschoolapplication/.  School personnel are required to complete and submit the entire school portion of the application.

Note The teacher(s) are to complete the school information portion of the application and upload supporting documentation. Applications from parents who complete the school section will not be accepted.

Each summer we have more requests for tutoring than we can fill.  Therefore, we suggest that parents submit their portion of the application and send the link for the school’s portion to the child’s teacher(s) as soon as possible.  Because we are a teaching institution, we are required to meet guidelines set forth by the Illinois State Board of Education and the International Literacy Association.  Thus, we must match students and tutors according to those guidelines, which compels us to operate on a modified first come-first serve basis.

Applications are only complete when: 1) Parent application is received; 2) School application is received; AND, 2 checks are received. All forms and fees must be submitted no later than April 1, 2019.

Program fee checks will be cashed in May; attendance deposit checks will be held until the end of the summer and returned to parents with the final report, if the child has met the attendance guidelines.

Parents will be notified by May 10, 2019 as to whether space is available for your child in the Summer Reading Improvement Program.  If accepted, your child will be assigned to a one-hour session.  We regret that we are unable to honor all requests for specific time slots.  Your child will be placed on a waiting list and your checks will be returned to you if space is not available.  No fees will be returned for students that have been accepted into the program and withdraw after April 19, 2019.
