Course Reserves

Course Reserves is a service available to current National Louis University faculty and instructors to provide students access to assigned readings. Course Reserves primarily includes books, journal articles, and book chapters, but other formats will be considered. For questions about Course Reserves, please contact Library and Learning Support

Students can search existing course reserves by course name or instructor.

General Guidelines

  • Submit requests at least two weeks before the items are expected to be available
  • Electronic Reserves are active for one term only and will be removed at the end of the term; renewal requests will be honored
  • Electronic Reserves are password protected; Use the NLU Portal username and password for access
  • If the library holds a license to a journal article of book chapter, direct access to that reading will be provided
  • Course reserves are intended for the use of current NLU students. Print reserves are located behind the circulation desk at the designated campus library and can be checked out with an NLU ID card.
  • The Library does not purchase course-required textbooks. If you have any questions, please contact a librarian.

Print Reserves

Print reserves are books or videos held in the library and may be checked out from the circulation desk during the library’s regular business hours and must be returned to the circulation desk or the library drop box before the building closes that day.

All print reserve items must either be owned by the library or be personal copies provided by the instructor for a limited time. Instructors may request print reserve items by contacting the library.

Electronic Reserves

Electronic Reserves are readings that are made available to students online. These items will be processed on first-come, first-served basis. Reserves can be made available within two weeks of the request. If you would like the library to place readings on Electronic Reserve for your students, please fill out this form.

You will receive notification about your submission via e-mail. Please fill out one form per course, listing all the readings you would like on reserve. For questions about this, please contact Library and Learning Support at lls@nl.edu.

Readings that require copyright permission can be hosted in D2L or in Library & Learning Support's course reserve system. If content is hosted in D2L, faculty are responsible for uploading PDFs. If content is hosted in the Course Reserve system, LLS will provide an access link that can be used in the course shell. Readings hosted in either the D2L course or LLS Course Reserve System will require copyright permission for every term they are used.
