Learn what to expect from your tutoring appointment.
While a Learning Support Specialist will not proof-read or correct your paper, you can expect to receive feedback regarding your questions on grammar, usage, mechanics, style, organization, and citations. The Learning Support Specialist will identify key issues within the first few pages of your essay and provide feedback. He or she will provide resources that will assist you in mastering college level writing skills. You will be expected to actively participate in the tutoring session by taking notes and responding to questions and feedback.
Before coming in for a follow-up appointment, revise your work according to the learning support specialist’s feedback. We also provide assistance in APA citation and formatting. For online help, please review our Resource Guide for APA citation style. If you find that you need additional assistance, schedule a tutoring appointment to review how to correctly cite and format an APA style paper.
Math tutoring is available in algebra, statistics, probability, finite, and pre-calculus subject areas. Each math tutoring session is designed to help you gain further understanding of particular mathematical topics. You should come prepared with specific questions and all work completed to the best of your ability. Learning Support Specialists will use example problems similar to your homework problems in order to explain concepts, but will not work through your assignment problem-by-problem.
Science tutoring is available in biology, chemistry, and environmental science. Come prepared with detailed assignment instructions, completed work, class notes, and textbook. Please have specific topics you wish to review. The Learning Support Specialist will help you work through interpreting the language of the textbook, assignment expectations, and may suggest additional online or print resources for you to reference.
Librarians can help you narrow a research topic, develop a search strategy, find and evaluate information, and use library databases and materials.
TAP (Test of Academic Proficiency) NLU students and applicants can schedule tutoring appointments to prepare for the TAP exam only after attending one of the TAP courses. The TAP course you attended must be in the same subject-area as the requested tutoring appointment.
