Tutoring

The Office of Learning Support provides tutoring services for currently enrolled NLU students with the aim of helping them become more independent and self-directed. Tutoring sessions are held in person/online and are offered for writing, research, and math skills. In addition, Learning Support also assists in college readiness skills, such as: organization, time management, growth mindset, and technology. Tutoring sessions provide the opportunity for students to review and strengthen their work with a Learning Specialist.

Face-to-Face Tutoring

Learning Support Specialists provide online and in-person tutoring for the following subject areas:

  • Writing (grammar, usage, mechanics, style, organization, and citations)
  • Math (algebra, statistics, probability, finite, and pre-calculus)
  • Science (biology, chemistry, and environmental science)
  • Research (research process, using library resources, finding and evaluating sources)
  • Study Skills (time management, organizational strategies, etc.)
  • Navigating D2L online courses

During your Appointment

  • Actively participate in the tutoring session.
  • Take notes and respond to the tutor's comments, feedback, and/or instructions.
  • Be open to feedback and new ideas.
  • Be prepared to make corrections or edits according to the tutor’s feedback.

After your Appointment

  • Feel free to schedule another appointment.
  • Before returning to your next appointment, make all necessary edits/revisions/corrections as discussed with the tutor.

Online Tools and Resources

Online Video Conferencing with Learning Support Specialists

Can’t make it to campus? NLU Learning Support Specialists also provide online tutoring using video conferencing software similar to Skype to connect with students. To use the video conferencing software (Zoom), you will need an internet connection, a mic, and a camera, or you can download the Zoom phone app to connect via smart phone. With live online tutoring, Learning Support Specialists and students can use the screen sharing feature to go over an assignment in real-time. This service provides you with dedicated tutoring help no matter your location.

Request an Appointment by choosing online as your preferred campus.

You will receive the video conferencing access information and instructions for logging into your appointment by follow up email to your NLU email account.

Drop-Off Essay Review

NLU Learning Support Specialists offer drop-off essay review services which will provide you with feedback on your writing assignments including a summary of issues identified in essay, comments on your chosen areas needing help, developed feedback on writing issues, and additional writing resources

Use the online submission form to submit your paper and receive feedback via your NLU email in 2 business days.

Additional online support via Tutor.com

Tutor.com is an online tutoring service which provides live chat with a tutor in your subject area. You can also submit a writing sample for tips and suggestions. Expect a reply within 24 hours or less.

You can access Tutor.com from your D2L Course under the Student Support drop down menu.

Grammarly, an online grammar checking tool, is available to all students, free of charge!  Grammarly offers clear, effective, mistake-free writing across multiple devices, browsers and apps.  It’s an automated proofreading and revision tool that students can use in conjunction with Learning Support’s Drop Off Essay Service.
