ADA Access and Accommodative Services

ADA/Section 504 Access Mission:

National Louis University is committed to building an inclusive university community that welcomes, values, respects and accommodates students from diverse backgrounds and abilities.

We work hard to ensure that all facilities and programs are fully accessible for all students regardless of disabling condition. If you are in need of physical or learning assistance, we want you to feel at home at NLU.

In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (1990) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (1973), NLU strives to ensure academic access through a variety of means including, but not limited to the following:

  • Course Exam Accommodations
  • Audio Recording in Classroom
  • Note taking Assistance
  • Alternative Textbook Formats
  • American Sign Language Interpreting Services
  • Alternative Classroom Furniture

How to Request Accommodations:

1. Complete the online Accommodation Request Form

2. One-on-one meeting with ADA coordinator to discuss request

3. Approved accommodations documented in a formal letter

*Supplemental third-party documentation, though not a requirement, can be submitted at any point in the process.  Accommodations can be renewed by the student on an annual basis; no formal meeting is required.

The Accommodations Implementation Process

Upon submission of the request form, as well as the submission of any pertinent third-party documentation, the ADA coordinator will make the final decision as to which of the requested accommodations will be approved.  Once that decision is made, the student will receive an email with a Letter of Access Services attached. The email instructs the student to read the attached letter and then reply to the email to either accept the approved accommodations as written or to ask further questions/suggest changes be made.

Once the student indicates formally accepts the approved accommodations, the accommodations become official at that point.  The approved accommodations are in effect from that point until the end of the current academic year.  The ADA coordinator follows up with each student prior to the start of the next academic year regarding renewal of accommodations.

Once accommodations are approved, the ADA coordinator drafts a companion document entitled the Faculty Memo of Approved Access Services.  This document is addressed to faculty, states the current academic year, and contains the approved access accommodations exactly as they appear in the student's letter.  This document is most often used to inform faculty of a student's approved accommodations. Once the confirmation notice is sent (typically via the Faculty Memo of Approved Access Services), the student is expected to follow up with each professor individually to discuss the appropriate implementation of each accommodation.  For certain accommodations, the ADA coordinator will consult with the student and faculty.
