NLU - How to Become a Licensed Professional Counselor

How to Become a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Illinois

The state of Illinois offers two levels of licensing: Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC). To earn LPC status, you must complete both education and examination requirements.1

Education Requirements for LPCs

At the educational level, you will need at least a master's degree in counseling or a related field (such as National Louis University's M.S. in Counseling) to become an LPC. Illinois does not require candidates to earn their graduate degrees from a program with a specific accreditation, although it is easier to complete the process if you do.2 National Louis University's M.S. in Counseling program is CACREP-accredited.

Examination Requirements for LPCs

In order to become an LPC, you must also pass a national examination. In the state of Illinois, that exam is the National Board for Certified Counselors' National Counselor Examination. To take the exam, you must first apply to the State of Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation for approval to take the exam online. Once approved, you will receive your exam registration form from the Illinois Board.3

In addition to applying to the State of Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation for approval to take the exam, you also need to get approval from Continental Testing Service (CTS). The fee for this step is currently $98.50, although it is subject to change. For more information about CTS, call 708-354-9911.

When you complete your CTS registration, you can submit it and the $195 fee to the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC). It usually takes about four weeks for the NBCC to process registrations. Once registration is complete, you can schedule your exam through AMP at the testing center of your choice. In Illinois, there are testing centers located in the following cities:

  • Buffalo Grove
  • Carbondale
  • Chicago
  • Franklin Park
  • Glen Ellyn
  • Libertyville
  • Matteson
  • Naperville
  • Rockford
  • Springfield
  • Urbana

You have a window of six months to take the exam once your registration has been approved. If you miss this window, you will need to begin the registration process again.4
