Early Childhood Education Programs

Early Childhood Education degree programs can prepare you to work with young children from birth to age eight.  Careers and jobs vary from childcare workers and teacher assistants to licensed kindergarten teachers and administrators, owners and consultants of center or home-based early childhood programs. As a graduate of an early childhood program, you’ll be equipped with the skill set essential for a career in early childhood.

Required Skills for Early Childhood Education

  • A knowledge of child development principles that promote teaching and learning
  • A knowledge of different instructional and evaluative methods and their historical and theoretical foundations
  • A knowledge of methods for teaching content and skills in a supportive learning environment
  • The ability to incorporate technology into practice
  • A knowledge of techniques for developing curriculum and lesson plans that impact student learning and allow for differentiation
  • An appreciation of diverse needs and perspectives in working with children and families
  • The ability to evaluate the financial and legal aspects of child care administration
  • The ability to conduct educational inquiry and assessment
  • A broad understanding of the impact family, community, students and schools have upon each other
  • A broad understanding of organizational theory, group dynamics and leadership application
  • An overall understanding of the NAEYC standards and their application to teaching and advocating for young children and their families.

Pursue an Early Childhood Degree

Want to pursue an early childhood education degree? National Louis University offers various degree programs in Early Childhood Education and Administration:

Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education: prepares graduates to work with children from birth through age eight, including teaching in classrooms and serving English language learners.

Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Practice: designed for students who are interested in early development and education but who do not wish to be licensed teachers.

Master of Education in Early Childhood Administration: designed for current and aspiring leaders of center and home-based early childhood programs.

Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) in Early Childhood Education: designed for students who would like to earn their Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) endorsed for early childhood and self-contained general education (age 0 to age 8).

M.Ed. or Ed.S. Curriculum and Instruction with Advanced Professional Specializations: M.Ed. and Ed.S. students can choose two concentration areas, one of which is Early Childhood Special Education. Completing the Early Childhood Special Education concentration allows students to apply for the Illinois Early Childhood Special Education Endorsement.


    NLU’s Chicago campus on South Michigan Avenue occupies five floors of the historic Peoples Gas Building. This landmark building, across the street from the Art Institute of Chicago and Grant Park, is easily accessible by train, bus and car and is surrounded by restaurants, parking lots/garages and shops.
