Residencies’ Community Walk Kicked Off August 5
From the desk of Liz Allen, NCE Partnership Manager
As part of all NCE’s residency programs, residents learn about their site school’s community assets and actively engage in designing ways to involve families and the school community in their teaching.
Last Monday, all five of NCE’s Chicago residency groups (AUSL ELE, AUSL MGE, CPS ELE BIL, CPS ECE BIL, CPS ECE SPE – over 90 residents and faculty!) met in the Chicago Campus Atrium to kick-off the annual Community Walk project. Residents were first given a rationale and framework for the Family and Community Engagement work they will be doing through their year-long residency. They were then shown how to research data about CPS schools; encouraged to look up info about the neighborhood, its history and its resources; and practiced how to respectfully interact with neighborhood residents during the walk through their school’s community on Thursday and Friday.
NCE faculty are continuing to develop learning opportunities to embed this imperative work of asset-based thinking and community engagement across its Teacher Preparation programs.
Assistant Professor Janet Lorch, Residency Coordinator, reports that this work has been supported by the Teacher Quality Partnership (TQP) grant, and presented at the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) Annual Meeting and also at the Effective Educator Development (EED) Summit held last week.
