NCE Teacher Prep Engage in Community Building Circles Practice

From the desk of Liz Allen, NCE Partnership Manager

NCE welcomed Gina Harris and Frances Kraft from Oak Park’s Equity Team to help us tackle the question of inclusivity in Higher Education on October 2 at the Chicago Campus.

NCE faculty and staff grappled with unpacking the concepts of race and racism as we know it, how we build relationships, strengthen community, and ultimately how this relates to our own teaching practice and that of our teacher candidates.  Kraft and Harris utilized a Toni Morrison interview about ‘white gaze’, the Oak Park-inspired documentary series America to Me, and themes highlighted in our TP faculty book club Culturally Sustaining Pedagogies: Teaching and Learning for Justice in a Changing World to prompt further reflection and discussion among the group.

The group engaged in meaningful conversations through Community Circle, a globally utilized practice signifying the “important contribution of each person, leveling the playing field, and fostering equity.”  Several NCE faculty shared positive feedback from implementing this practice in their own classroom with candidates.

This is a continuation of the Deans for Impact Illinois Educator Prep Network initiative, doing an internal dive into improving teacher candidate readiness to teach in diverse settings (which informs, and is informed by, our Practice Based Teaching, Mentor Development, and other related efforts).

If you have any questions about this work, please contact any of the current Network team members: Sherri Bressman, Lisa Mozer, Janet Lorch, Drea Whitley, Aleks Veselovsky, or Eun Ko.
