NCE Faculty Spotlight
- Assistant Professor Leslie Katch presented "Infant Excessive Crying and Parent Well-Being: Working with Mothers AND Fathers to Support Positive Coping" at the 2018 Annual Conference of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) held during November in Washington, DC.
- On December 5-8, Assistant Professor Ryan McCarty presentaed at the American Reading Forum in Sanibel, Florida. The presentation was entitled, "If They're Trying Their Hardest, I'm Gonna Try My Hardest": Supporting Latinx Student Success in AP Coursework Through Dialogic Teaching.
- On January 7, Associate Professor Vito Dipinto spent the day at Harvest Christian Academy in Elgin, Illinois conducting innovative chemistry and physics activities with Upper School Science Teacher Erika Check (M.A.T. Secondary Education '17).The physics students participated in a re-creation of Einstein's famous thought experiment on how he discovered the special theory of relativity.
The chemistry students engaged in an inquiry lab that began with storyboarding a movie entitled, "It's a Gas: Making the Invisible Visible." The learning experience went on to include experimenting with the chemistry of pop rocks. Dr. Dipinto and Erika will be presenting this "Coffee Can Stoichiometry" investigation at the ChemEd Conference in Naperville, Illinois this summer.
- On January 18, Associate Professor Ruth Quiroa was cited in the School Library Journal online article, "To Slang or Not To Slang: Defending Authentic Language in YA and Children's Literature."
- Professor Seema Imam was an invited presenter at the 8th Annual West Coast Education Forum, sponsored by the Islamic Society of North America, held January 18-19 in Orange County, California.
Dr. Imam's workshop, "Delve into Teaching Strategies for the 21st Century," featured segments on Technology Standards; "Triple E;" Maker Space; and Empowering Students Through Being Actively Engaged and the Principles of Islamic Pedagogy.
- Assistant Professor Jennifer Cooper presented with students Ivelisse Negron and Christina Campbell on January 31 at the 40th Anniversary Annual Convention of the Illinois School Psychologists Association (ISPA) in Springfield, Illinois. The presentation was entitled, "The Role of School Psychologists in Creating Trauma-Sensitive Schools."
- Associate Professor Donna Wakefield presented "Digital Differentiation with Hyperdocs" on February 1 at the Assistive Technology Industry Association Conference in Orlando, Florida.
