NCE Doctoral Candidates from the University of Dubuque Doctoral Pilot Project Participate in Doctoral Hooding Ceremony

On Saturday, March 7, 2020, the National College of Education convened a doctoral hooding ceremony in the Blades Chapel at the University of Dubuque (UD) in Iowa to celebrate Ed.D. degree completion by eight candidates who were UD faculty and staff.  Doctoral candidates included Dr. Amy Ressler, a former professor of Drama Studies at both NLU and the University of Dubuque and a current faculty member at California State University, Bakersfield.

Five NCE faculty played roles in the ceremony while Dubuque VP for Academic Affairs Mark Ward delivered individualized reflections for each doctoral candidate.  NCE Associate Dean Kristi Stricker delivered the welcome and the concluding charge.  Associate Professor Karen Tardrew delivered the keynote address.

Associate Professor Stuart I. Carrier observed that "NCE responded in 2017 to the University of Dubuque's interest in NLU doctoral programs after UD hired an NLU Educational Leadership (EDL) graduate as a full-time faculty member.  From 2017 through 2020 NCE delivered the entirety of a customized executive blended model of the EDL Doctorate to UD faculty, including visits to the UD cohort by NLU Deputy Provost Michael Carr, NCE Dean Rob Muller, and a representative of the Higher Learning Commission assessing NLU's off-campus offerings.  The fact that our Dubuque pilot project yielded 73% on-time doctoral completions by these dedicated candidates stands as proof of concept that NLU has powerful capacities to deliver doctoral programming to a variety of specialized audiences."
