These scholarships are available to both Undergraduates and Graduates in both the College of Professional Studies and Advancement and the National College of Education. Award amounts range from $500 to $4,000. If you have successfully completed at least one term at NLU prior to April 4, 2018, complete the scholarship application by the Monday, April 23, 2018 deadline.
Please refer to the Merit-Based Scholarship List 2018-2019 to determine those scholarships whose eligibility criteria you meet.
*Note: each scholarship has specific requirements, so applicants should be sure to apply only for scholarships for which they are eligible, but to apply for all scholarships for which they are eligible.
To apply, students must submit an application, resume, letter of recommendation, and essay:
- Resume - The resume is an opportunity to highlight any accomplishments that make you an ideal merit scholarship recipient. Examples of additional resume sections might include Honors, Activities, Achievements, Foreign Languages Spoken or Volunteer Experience.
The Career Development Office can assist with resume writing. Contact them at 312-261-3270 or careerdevelopment@nl.edu to schedule a resume review. To ensure all students who would like assistance are able to be serviced, resume reviews will not be scheduled after Friday, April 20, 2018. - Letter of recommendation – The letter of recommendation needs to be from an NLU faculty member or adjunct faculty member who has had you in at least one class in the last 12 months. The letter should be emailed by the professor directly to stapplications@nl.edu. Please request the letter of recommendation well in advance of the April 9th deadline.
- Essay - The essay is a significant consideration in this scholarship. Please submit a one-to-three-page essay, including your name and NLU ID number on the first page. Your essay should be written specifically to apply for the merit-based scholarships, and it should address the following question: What do you want to accomplish with your degree from NLU?
In addition, it is essential that your essay detail distinctive service-related contributions that you have made prior to or during your time at NLU. Since there are many NLU students with high academic standing, you should be sure to address the special considerations that make you particularly worthy of receiving this scholarship (e.g., accomplishments, personal challenges, need).
If you need assistance writing your essay, you can make an appointment to meet with a writing specialist either in-person or online using the online request form. You can also submit your essay for review through the drop-off essay review online submission form. Contact Learning Support at lls@nl.edu or by phone at 312-261-3374 with questions. The deadline to request essay assistance is Friday, March 30, 2018.
