Dean Muller Featured in Chalkbeat Articles
Chalkbeat, a nonprofit education news outlet, recently published two articles about "Diversifying the Pipeline" in which NLU was mentioned and Dean Rob Muller was quoted.
The first publication described how teacher diversity is a challenging goal amid a shrinking pipeline. The second news story explained that Chicago needs more diverse teachers, but faces major challenges.
A teacher residency program launched last year with NLU and Relay Chicago was noted as a pipeline solution within the Chicago Public Schools. The program recruits heavily from individuals looking to transition to the education field and from paraprofessionals already working in classrooms who want to be full-time teachers -- tapping into a pool of classroom support staff who tend to be a more diverse group than new teacher candidates.
It was reported that Dean Muller has sought to help the Chicago school district in part by helping train teacher aides and paraprofessionals to become teachers. "It's not just getting folks in the pipeline but keeping them there," the Dean was quoted as saying. The Dean further added that focusing on supporting diverse new teachers with mentoring and other supports early in their first few years on the job could address "leaks" in the teacher pipeline.
