Florida School of Professional Psychology Programs

Clinical Psychology Programs at FSPP

The clinical psychology programs at the Florida School of Professional Psychology (FSPP) at National Louis University are designed to teach students to function effectively as clinical psychologists. The curricula for these programs encompass the science of psychology, clinical practice and professional development. Our faculty utilize the practitioner-scholar model of education which allows for the integration of knowledge with hands-on clinical experiences.

Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology

The master of arts (M.A.) in clinical psychology degree program is designed to meet the needs of both those students seeking a terminal degree at the master’s level and those who eventually plan to pursue a doctoral degree.

The terminal master’s degree is not, however, license-eligible in the state of Florida. The master’s degree program is designed to provide students a strong clinical orientation with an emphasis in psychological assessment.

Depending on state requirements, the master of arts in clinical psychology degree program may help prepare students for licensure in psychology or counseling at the master's level.

Additional coursework and supervised post-master's clinical experience may be required to qualify to sit for master's level licensure exams. Master's-level licensure varies from state to state. It is the student's responsibility to determine the requirements for professional licensure in the state he or she wishes to practice.

Admission to the master’s degree program, or completion of the master’s degree, does not guarantee admission to the doctor of psychology (Psy.D.) in clinical psychology degree program.

The Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) in Clinical Psychology

The doctor of psychology (Psy.D.) in clinical psychology degree program has been designed to educate and train students so that they may eventually be able to function effectively as clinical psychologists.

To ensure that students are prepared adequately, the curriculum is designed to provide for the meaningful integration of theory, training and practice. This program emphasizes the development of attitudes, knowledge and skills essential in the formation of professional psychologists who are committed to the ethical provision of quality services.

Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology Concentrations

Students enrolled in the Psy.D. in clinical psychology degree program may choose a concentration in:

  • Child & adolescent psychology
  • Geropsychology
  • Couples and family therapy
  • Neuropsychology

During their clinical training, students advance through progressively challenging levels of practica. At each level, a student’s progress is assessed in multiple ways by faculty members and field supervisors. Psy.D. in clinical psychology students generally complete their practicum in the second and third years of the program, with an optional advanced practicum in the fourth year and their pre-doctoral internship in the fifth year. In addition, students must successfully complete the Clinical Competency Examination (CCE) as part of their practicum training.

Psy.D. students will acquire didactic knowledge in these areas:

  • History of thought and development in the discipline of psychology
  • Cognitive and affective bases of human functioning
  • Biological bases of human behavior and social bases of individual and group behavior
  • Human development
  • Foundations of measurement theory and research methods
