NLU MBA Programs-Why Get an MBA

Why Get an MBA?

In 2014, the U.S. Department of Education reported that the MBA was the most sought-after post-graduate degree in America—and for good reason. An MBA positions you for success. Whether you want to enter the business world, striving to be an effective leader and organizational change agent, or are looking to change careers altogether, an MBA gives you the skills and competitive edge you need to accomplish your career goals.

An MBA can position you to:

  • Advance in your current career.
  • Enter the business world.
  • Change careers.
  • Assume a leadership role.
  • Earn more money and enjoy greater job security.

Today's businesses are looking for savvy, globally competent leaders who can achieve results and drive change—all skills you'll learn through National Louis University's MBA, MBA in Entrepreneurship or MBA in Nonprofit Management.

Career Outlook: MBA Jobs for NLU Graduates

Earning an MBA makes you highly employable. According to the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) Class of 2014 Alumni Poll, 71 percent of alumni stated they couldn't have secured their jobs without the training and skills acquired during their graduate business education. In addition, more than 85 percent of alumni credit their MBAs with preparing them for their careers, allowing for faster career advancement and increasing their earning potential.2

On top of that, more businesses report that they plan to hire MBA graduates in the future. An impressive 84 percent of employers included in the GMAC 2015 Corporate Recruiters Survey said they planned to hire MBA graduates in 2015, up from 74 percent in 2014. The survey also revealed significant increases in the percentage of businesses across multiple industry sectors that planned to hire MBA graduates in 2015. Below is a snapshot of the 2015 projected employer demand for MBA graduates by industry:3

  • Consulting: 81% expected to hire MBA graduates
  • Energy/Utilities: 96% expected to hire MBA graduates
  • Finance/Accounting: 84% expected to hire MBA graduates
  • Health Care/Pharmaceuticals: 75% expected to hire MBA graduates
  • Technology: 93% expected to hire MBA graduates
  • Manufacturing: 81% expected to hire MBA graduates
  • Products/Services: 86% expected to hire MBA graduates

Positive hiring trends like these highlight the immense value employers place on the MBA degree, as well as the skills business students acquire during their graduate education.

MBA Graduates Earn More

In a recent analysis conducted by PayScale, a Seattle-based company that provides compensation data to businesses and workers, analysts found that an MBA can earn business professionals a sizable seven-figure income over a period of 20 years, and that's a conservative estimate. This number doesn't include stock-based compensation, retirement benefits or other non-cash benefits.4

The PayScale analysis doesn't include future projections for MBA earnings, but the GMAC 2015 Corporate Recruiters Survey Report does—and the future looks bright for MBA graduates. According to the GMAC report, more than half of employers worldwide plan to increase MBA salaries at either the rate of inflation or higher. In the U.S. alone, 49 percent of employers expect to increase MBA starting salaries in 2015.5

Leadership and Business Skills for the Real World

Businesses want to hire strategic leaders who can manage change and innovation, and earning your MBA is a great way to fast-track your leadership potential. According to the GMAC Class of 2014 Alumni Poll, 92 percent of MBA graduates agree that their MBA prepared them for a leadership position.6

Leadership skills aren't the only factor employers are looking for in job candidates, though. The GMAC 2015 Corporate Recruiters Survey Report found that some of the most important skills businesses are looking for in MBA graduates include:7

  • Proven ability to perform
  • Strong oral communication skills
  • Strong technical/quantitative skills
  • Strong writing skills
  • Strong academic success
  • Specialization/concentration
  • Managing people in an informal role

Global competence is also a key area for modern business leaders. Global competence refers to developing a deep understanding of the international landscape, including an appreciation for and the ability to collaborate with diverse groups of people from different cultural backgrounds.8 With the increasingly global nature of business, global competence is one of a leader's most valuable assets.

To develop and refine these and other skills employers are looking for, a high-quality graduate business education like the MBA programs offered at NLU are a must.

Students interested in NLU's MBA in Nonprofit Management will benefit from a strong MBA curriculum coupled with the deeper study of management issues and operations unique to nonprofit organizations, such as nonprofit governance, fundraising and strategic philanthropy, and program evaluation. With a focus on the principle of authentic leadership, NLU's MBA and MBA in Nonprofit Management offers students all aspects of how today's business professionals achieve results and drive significant, positive organizational impact through leading from a place of passion, integrity and relationship development.

NLU also offers an MBA in Entrepreneurship program, combining the strength of NLU's core MBA curriculum with an entrepreneurship concentration designed to develop the skills to start a business or make a bigger impact within an organization. In addition to building a solid foundation of business knowledge, students will have the opportunity to refine skills that are critical to initiating projects and ventures of their own, building out existing ideas and dealing with the challenges of an entrepreneur.
