Executive Director Jobs

They are responsible for guiding the organization's overall vision and direction, which can include managing areas such as finance, community outreach, staffing, fundraising and day-to-day policy. Many nonprofit organizations require an advanced degree for this position, such as a master's in nonprofit management, as well as experience in the field of management.

Salary Information

Executive directors at nonprofit organizations earn an average salary of $61,782 annually, while the top 25 percent of earners make more than $83,000 per year.4 Nonprofit executive directors in the Chicago area earn 26 percent more than the national average, with a median annual salary of $77,952.5

CEO Jobs

Chief executive officers (CEOs) at nonprofits are responsible for the overall operations of their organization. This can include overseeing employees, volunteers and finances, as well as making major business decisions. Common tasks for CEOs at nonprofit organizations include establishing organizational goals and initiatives, building relationships with stakeholders and other executives, and driving the organization's strategic planning and business development.

Salary Information

The median annual salary for nonprofit CEOs is $102,910, with the lowest 10 percent earning about $54,000 per year and the highest earners making around $218,000 annually.6 Experience is often a key determining factor when it comes to a nonprofit CEO's salary. Average entry-level salary is about $75,000 per year, and CEOs with 5–10 years of experience earn around $96,000 annually.7 For those with more than 10 years of experience, salaries can reach six figures.8
