Regional Accreditation

National Louis University (NLU) is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), one of six regional institutional accreditors recognized by the United States Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

Academic Quality Improvement Program (AQIP)

In 2006, NLU chose the AQIP pathway to regional accreditation, one of three pathways to accreditation offered by HLC. As its name implies, AQIP is founded on the principles of continuous quality improvement, an organized approach to goal-setting, networking, and accountability. This approach is codified in the six AQIP Categories, which provide a framework for examining, analyzing, and improving university processes as well as invigorating evidence-driven decision-making within an institution of higher learning. The six AQIP Categories are operationalized through a variety of institutional self-assessments, peer review activities, and strategic action projects aimed at continuous improvement. Specific details of these activities and processes are explained in depth on the HLC AQIP website.

Systems Portfolio and Appraisal

AQIP calls upon institutions to undergo a Systems Appraisal every four years. This is an opportunity for an institution to get expert, objective, third-party feedback on its strengths and opportunities for improvement. In turn, institutions gain insight in determining the next targets for advancing quality in the institution through Action Projects and other continuous improvement initiatives.

The Systems Appraisal is based on a Systems Portfolio which presents an overview of the institution, and answers explicitly all of the questions under each of the AQIP Categories. The past and current versions of NLU’s Systems Portfolio are available to the University community and the public on this site.

Action Projects

Action Projects are key mechanism institutions can use to improve performance. Because AQIP is committed to helping colleges and universities continuously improve their performance in doing the things they value, it requires participating institutions to commit themselves to action, working consciously to improve the activities and processes that currently produce unsatisfying results. HLC’s Action Project Directory Archive provides the public with summaries of both the institution’s completed and active AQIP Action Projects.
