Where can I find information on financial aid resources that are available to help assist with educational costs?
You can find information about federal and state grants, work study positions and loan programs here.
How do I apply for financial aid?
The first step is to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and add the National Louis University Federal school code: 001733. This application can be completed online at www.fafsa.gov. Students should complete the FAFSA as early as possible when it becomes available in October of their Senior year so they can be considered for all available resources.
When completing the FAFSA both the student and the parents will need to enter their personal information. Documents needed to complete the FAFSA include the following:
- Social Security Number
- Your and your parent's FSA ID number to sign the FAFSA electronically
- Alien Registration Number (if not a U.S. citizen)
- Driver's License Number
- Your W-2 Forms if you worked
- Your Federal Income Tax Return if you filed
- Your parents’ W2 Forms, Federal Income Tax Return, untaxed benefits records such as Social Security, Temporary Assistance to Needy Families, welfare, or veterans’ benefits records, and Business and investments information
The Student Finance Office can assist you with any questions you may have about completing the FAFSA.
Can I complete the FAFSA if my parents are undocumented?
Yes, only the student needs to have a social security number (SSN) in order to complete the FAFSA. If your parents do not have social security numbers they should enter all zeros for the SSN. The Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) should not be entered in place of the social security number on the FAFSA.
When will I receive a financial aid award letter?
You will receive a financial aid award letter after receipt of your FAFSA and all required docents (includes completion of verification, if selected). Your award letter will include information on the federal and state grants you are eligible to receive and the student loans you are eligible to borrow. If you are eligible for student loans, a loan acceptance form will be included with your award letter. In addition, if you borrow a student loan, you many need to complete a Federal Direct Stafford Loan Master Promissory Note (MPN) and Entrance Loan Counsleing online at studentloans.gov.
What if I am selected for verification?
The Department of Education (ED) randomly selects approximately one-third of all applicants for a process called verification. After receiving your FAFSA data, if you are selected for verification you will be required to send additional information. We will contact you to let you know what required documents you must submit in order to complete verification. Verification must be completed before we can award you financial aid.
Who should I contact if I have questions?
If you have questions about financial aid eligibility, completing the FAFSA or available resources please contact the Student Finance Office via email at D214@nl.edu.
