Did You Know?

NLU undergraduates earn quarter hours and graduates earn semester hours. While a typical graduate course is 3SH, and an undergraduate course is generally 5QH, the semester or quarterly hours can vary by program.

Once you have confirmed that your course is in compliance, you do not need to audit again unless you are teaching it in a new modality or length of time. (Example: Face-to-Face to an online course or 10-week course to a 5-week course)

Adjunct Spotlight

Susan Lorey, National College of Education, was recently presented with the Distinguished Teaching Award selected by the student body of National Louis University. Susan joined NLU's adjunct faculty in 2001, as a student-teacher supervisor and in 2007, as a course instructor. She has taught nine different graduate and undergraduate courses for NCE in Wheeling, Lisle, Skokie, and Elgin. Additionally, Susan piloted the first, blended post-graduate reading program course, a newly required 3-semester hour literacy course for Secondary Ed. teaching candidates, and also a SCIRA conference professional development course. In 2011, she joined the Adjunct Council served as secretary in 2012-13 school year and chair-elect in 2013-14.

News You Can Use

Despite its misleading name, Starfish is an early alert system that NLU is using as a retention tool. Its main purpose is to alert advising and learning support of students' non-attendance and academic needs. Research has shown that the earlier the intervention, the higher the chances of academic success for at-risk students. Adjunct faculty plays a large role in the success of the Starfish initiative.

Email alerts will remind you to fill out the Starfish progress survey. Access to Starfish is through your NLU Portal listed under Faculty/Staff. Within the progress survey, flags can be raised for students in need of student services and kudos can be given. Flags can be raised at any point during the quarter. The appropriate student service will reach out in the hopes of resolving the issue. The student will also receive an email regarding the alert. You can go back into Starfish to view any notes added as a follow-up to the raised flag.

For more information, view the Starfish User Guide or a demonstration video. Contact Steve Neer at with any questions or technical issues.
