Greetings from National Louis University Adjunct Council

The Adjunct Council is excited to begin a third year of the Adjunct Council Newsletter. The purpose of the newsletter is to briefly share practical information relevant to adjunct faculty. Inside the quarterly issue, you will find important dates, resources, contact information, adjunct accomplishments, and current news. With each issue, Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall, we will provide the latest news and resources to keep you updated and informed.

The Adjunct Council, which consists of 9 members holding three-year terms, held its first meeting in 2002. The purpose of the Council is to actively participate in University governance initiatives and work to improve the quality of life for adjunct faculty throughout NLU. The Council meets a minimum of 10 times within an academic year, in addition to selected council committees, and annually at Fall Connection.

The Adjunct Council's mission is (a) to represent the professional interests of the adjunct faculty at National Louis University (b) to enhance the adjunct faculty role at National Louis University through active participation in shared governance, (c) to advise the Provost and President on matters that concern the adjunct faculty at NLU.


Adjunct Council Meetings

Adjunct Council meetings are open to all adjuncts. Meetings are held the second Thursday of every month from 3:45pm-5:00pm at the Chicago campus (room #6017) or via Zoom Video Conference where we discuss issues pertinent to the adjunct community. NLU's Fall Connection

Connecting with Our Future is the exciting theme for this year's Fall Connection, which will be held September 7 and 8 at the NLU Chicago campus. The Connection event will culminate in our annual reception which will be held at the University Club in Chicago, 76 East Monroe Street, a short walking distance from NLU's Chicago campus. Adjunct faculty invited! The Adjunct Council will hold its meeting during Fall Connection on Thursday, September 8, in Room 6017, from 2:30 pm to 3:45 pm. RSVP for the Fall Connection and reception here!

NLU seeks to inspire all of our students. If you are currently know of a NLU Veteran or military-connected student who needs assistance or has a question regarding our program or support services, refer them to the Ramon Prieto, Director of Student Vereran Coordination, at 312-261-3262 or email

The Veterans Resource Center (VRC) is located on the Chicago Campus in room 5044. This is a gathering place that serves as a focal point for all NLU veteran and military-connected students to study, relax and socialize.  The VRC welcomes all members of the NLU community.  Please stop by for a visit and meet the staff!   

According to Ramon Prieto, Director of Student Veteran Coordination, “Our goal is to promote the veterans program and better inform the NLU community of who we are and how we support the academic improve and foster the relationship with our NLU community to better serve our student veterans and military-connected students.”

NLU has its own student chapter of Student Veterans for America. The chapter’s mission is to provide our veteran and military-connected students at NLU with support, resources and opportunities to facilitate their growth and success as students, professionals and community leaders. Have your students look for information at this link.

Library & Learning Support Class Visits

Are you teaching a course with students that are new to NLU? Possibly they have been out of college for quite some time? Or does your course include research and writing? Consider having the Library & Learning Support (LLS) visit your class. You can schedule an hour or less for LLS to present material on research, writing, or an introduction to LLS services. Click here for a request form!

Adjunct Spotlight

Roy Kaelin, CPSA

Roy Kaelin was selected by the NLU Faculty Association as a recipient of the Excellence in Service Award for Adjunct Faculty. Over the past academic year, Roy has served on Adjunct Council by helping to update and re-draft the Council's charter to encourage more participation from the NLU adjunct community; on the University Assessment Council and the Rubric Task Force, by assisting in drafting and testing rubrics both useful and necessary to NLU in fulfilling its university-level outcomes; on the Pathways Advisory Group, by assisting in reviewing course content and to help the group develop its methods to evaluate prospective teachers; on the Prior Learning Assessment Team, by assisting in the revision of its rubrics and updating of its curriculum maps; by participating in the annual USO package drive; and, by being an active member of both the Connection Committee and the Faculty Appreciation Committee. Having taught courses since 2011 in the General Education curriculum and the Bachelor of Science in Management Program in CPSA, Roy is very grateful for being honored by NLU with this award.

Ursula Pawlowski, CPSA

Ursula Pawlowski was selected by the NLU Faculty Association as a recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award. Since 2014, Ursula Pawlowski has taught graduate and undergraduate business management and human resources courses in the College of Professional Studies and Advancement (CPSA). Currently, she serves as the Assistant Program Director for the Masters of Science in Human Resources Management and Development (MSHRMD) Program at NLU. Additionally, Ursula serves as the faculty adviser for the NLU Student Chapter of the Society of Human Resources Managers and is a member of the advisory committee for the redesign of the MSHRMD program to assist the redesign of both blended and online courses in the MSHRMD program. Ursula was also a member of the University Level Written Communication Assessment committee during Summer 2016 and is the recipient of the 2016 CPSA Adjunct Faculty of the Year award, as selected by her students.

The Learning and Information Technology Services (LITS) department is comprised of four departments:

NLU's Online Tutoring Services

Library & Learning Support is transitioning from Smarthinking to an online tutoring service called Online tutoring services allow us to provide academic support in subject areas and languages for which LLS staff do not tutor, extending the reach of our services and ensuring equity and access for all NLU students.

For the fall term, please update your syllabi and course materials that refer to Smarthinking to reflect the transition by referring students to NLU’s free online tutoring services accessible via NLU Portal or D2L. 

Like Smarthinking, offers 24/7 online tutoring in a variety of subjects. Additional features include: 

  • Robust data analytics and post-session student progress assessments
  • Instant access to a live tutor
  • Reports directly available to faculty
  • Interfaces with Starfish referral system
  • Reduction in tech requirements
  • Mobile access

NLU Status Change?

Has your status with NLU changed and you no longer plan to teach? Maybe, you took a new job or moved out of state.

Please notify the Human Resources Department not only of address, W-4, or other personal contact updates but also of your employment status. Keeping up to date personnel records is a goal of the Human Resources Department. It is important to keep your Program Chair updated as well.
