Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology

The doctor of psychology (Psy.D.) in clinical psychology degree program has been designed to educate and train students so that they may eventually be able to function effectively as clinical psychologists.

To ensure that students are prepared adequately, the curriculum is designed to provide for the meaningful integration of theory, training and practice. This program emphasizes the development of attitudes, knowledge and skills essential in the formation of professional psychologists who are committed to the ethical provision of quality services.

National Louis University offers this program in a highly-engaged, face-to-face, intensive, full-time learning environment, with classes meeting in the mornings, afternoons and evenings. This program is available on our Chicago campus.

Chicago/Argosy Teach-Out Students
The clinical Psy.D. program under the name National Louis University, Chicago/Argosy Teach-Out is 'accredited, inactive' by the Commission on Accreditation of the APA. This accreditation status designates an accredited program that is no longer admitting students. This status was granted to accommodate teach-out students from Argosy University. Persons who were not enrolled in accredited Argosy programs are not to be admitted to the National Louis University, Chicago /Argosy Teach-out 'accredited, inactive' program.

The program accepts students who have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. Although prior degrees need not be in psychology, some psychology courses are required (as foundation courses), and some experience in psychological services is desirable.

Admission to NLU’s M.A. program in clinical psychology or completion of the master's degree does not guarantee admission to the doctor of psychology (Psy.D.) in clinical psychology degree program.

To apply to the Psy.D. in clinical psychology degree program, applicants must have:

  • A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution or an appropriately certified foreign institution
  • An undergraduate degree grade point average of at least 3.0 (on a scale of 4.0) -or- a conferred graduate degree grade point average of 3.25 (on a scale of 4.0)
  • A minimum score on a pre-approved English language proficiency test is required for all applicants whose native language is not English or who have not graduated from an institution at which English is the language of instruction as specified in the admission policies, English language proficiency
  • Completion of an interview with members of the program admissions committee

All applications for admission must be submitted to the admissions department. A clinical psychology enrollment specialist is available to help interested applicants complete the following required documentation:

  • Completed application for admission form
  • Professional goal statement with a self-appraisal of qualifications for the profession
  • Current résumé (or career summary)
  • Three recommendation letters
  • Official transcripts from all post-secondary schools attended

 

All applicants must meet NLU's general admission requirements as well as additional requirements specific to this program. Refer to the appropriate application checklist available online at nl.edu/applyonline.

Students who are admitted into the program will be responsible for completing the program requirements that are in effect at the time of their admission. The Illinois School of Professional Psychology at National Louis University retains the right to modify these requirements in accordance with the demands of the profession of psychology.

To be eligible for graduation, students must meet the following requirements:

  • A minimum of 98 semester credit hours that includes:
    • 68.5 semester credit hours of core course requirements
    • 13.5 semester credit hours of elective course requirements (Advanced Intervention and Supervision, Diversity, Integrated Assessment, Professional Practice, and General Elective)
    • 12 semester credit hours of practicum requirements (two years)
    • 4 semester credit hours of clinical research project requirements
  • Successful completion of Professionalization Group
  • Successful completion of the Scientific Capstone no later than the end of the fifth year
  • Successful completion of the Clinical Research Project
  • Successful completion of the Clinical Evaluation Scientific Capstone
  • Successful completion of a one-year, full-time internship or its equivalent
  • GPA of at least a “B” (3.0 on a scale of 4.0), with no more than two grades lower than “B-,” and a grade of “B-” or better in all non-elective courses
