Aleksandra Veselovsky

Assistant Professor of Secondary Education

Programs/Classes Taught:

  • Introduction to Teaching at the Secondary Level
  • Methods for Teaching Mathematics at the Secondary and Middle School Level
  • Math for Educators
  • Advanced Methods for Teaching Middle Grades Mathematics
  • Student Teaching Seminar

The principles that guide my teaching are:

1) Knowledge is acquired and enhanced, not handed down. Whether teaching education or mathematics courses I draw on my students’ experiences and expertise in order to develop them into effective practitioners.

2) Mathematics and teaching problems have multiple entry points and can be solved in a variety of different ways. A deep level of understanding can be reached through analysis of problems.  Having multiple solution methods presents students with an opportunity to engage in making connections which deepens their understanding.

Areas of Expertise:

Practice-based teacher education, teaching through problem-solving, and culturally relevant teaching in the mathematics classroom

MAT in Secondary Education from National Louis University

Ph.D. in Curriculum Studies with emphasis in Mathematics Education from University of Illinois at Chicago
Dissertation title: Knowledge base of mathematics teacher educators: A goals-knowledge-practice approach

Research and Interests:

Aleksandra Veselovsky’s dissertation examined the work of mathematics teacher educators (MTEs) who teach mathematics content courses to pre-service elementary teachers in different university contexts. Guided by the research literature related to the study of the knowledge base of mathematics teachers and MTE’s and her research data, one of her research outcomes is a framework which examines the forms and sources of their knowledge, including how their knowledge and ideologies are used to develop their goals and inform their practice.  This framework can be applied to the study of teacher educators outside of the discipline of mathematics, and thus can serve as a powerful tool for the professional development of all teacher educators.
