Biography:

Dr. Jaclyn Rivard comes to NLU with nine years of experience in higher education as a scholar-practitioner. After a previous career in the non-profit world where much of her work was focused on staff and volunteer development, Jacci began her work in higher education working in faculty development. As a practitioner she worked with new faculty orientation and seminar, faculty learning communities, and the development and execution of many other programs. While working in faculty development, Jacci was also part of a team doing research on the field that culminated in publication of the book, Faculty Development in the Age of Evidence: Current Practices, Future Imperatives.

Jacci also has practical experience in higher education in advising, alumni relations, program evaluation, assessment, program building and management, and grant-writing. For the past three and a half years, she worked at the Center for Research on Instructional Change in Postsecondary Education (CRICPE) at Western Michigan University. Her work at CRICPE was primarily research and evaluation. She focused on student success and retention, change in higher education, high impact practices, and higher education learning spaces.

 

In addition to this work, Jacci’s dissertation and resulting work focused on civic engagement in higher education, particularly the impacts of faculty and institutional emphases on student civic engagement outcomes. She is currently working on an examination of student conceptualizations of mentors and mentorship, continuing her work examining high impact practices, and writing a grant proposal to support further work on learning spaces.

 

At home, Jacci is parent to a fabulous 4-year-old who loves reading, swimming, horseback riding, cooking, doing art projects, and building with Legos. They love traveling together, and each summer they take an annual “Epic Road Trip” that is the source of many happy memories.

Education:

Dr. Rivard has a PhD from the University of Minnesota in Organizational Leadership, Policy, and Development with a focus on higher education.

She also has a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership, Research, and Technology with a focus on Higher Education and Student Affairs from Western Michigan University, and a Bachelor of Science in Political Science with a minor in Women’s Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Superior.

Research and Interests:

Jacci's research interests include civic engagement, faculty development, learning spaces, student success, and equity and inclusion higher education.
