Biography:

Colleen Hamilton is a language educator and scholar focusing on Spanish-English bilingualism across schooling trajectories and contexts. Her teaching and research have found her in English content-based immersion, French foreign language, Spanish-English dual language immersion, and independent language study settings. Her work with teachers includes elementary-secondary teacher education, middle grades curriculum design, and professional development in culturally and linguistically responsive pedagogy. Her experiences in North American and European multilingual settings informs her critical sociolinguistic, plurilingual, and cultural-historical perspectives on language as a human right.

Research and Interests:

With interests at the intersection of language, power, and identity, Colleen Hamilton works to shift the focus of language education from enrichment to equity by contributing to transformative educational initiatives and critical scholarship that elevate the practices and perspectives of bilinguals. Recent projects supporting equitable educational outcomes for bilingual learners include:

  • Bilingualism and biliteracy support at a youth-run community newspaper
  • Secondary bilingual and immigrant student college preparation
  • Translanguaging and learning in elementary bilingual classrooms
