Biography:

Suzette Fromm Reed, PhD, is a community psychologist, Associate Professor at National Louis University (NLU) where she developed and now co-directs the University’s first PhD program which is in Community Psychology. She also works with students in the psychology Masters and undergraduate programs and has been intensely engaged in finding innovative ways to engage non-traditional students including staying abreast of best practices with interactive and online supports to traditional teaching. Her recent publications and presentations cover issues of aging and obesity prevention. She is currently working on an article examining best practices for community engagement on issues of girl empowerment and obesity prevention positioning these topics as a social justice issues. She is most actively engaged in the field of Community Psychology by serving on a committee that publishes “TheACT,” a publication intended to bridge the gap between community psychology theorists and practitioners and also more broadly market the field to related audiences. Prior to NLU, she worked with non-profit agencies at both the national and local level on issues related to children and families. Much of her research examined how collective efficacy and social capital may play a role in buffering against child maltreatment and how social marketing may be applied to this and similar topics. Currently, her research is primarily focused on community aspects of social capital and collective efficacy as they relate to health promotion, aging, woman/girl empowerment and the immigrant experience.
