Biography:

Lynette Emmons began her teaching career at Nettelhorst School in Chicago in 1988. In 1993 she was named a fellow of the Illinois Writing Project and in1996 was a Runner-Up for the Chicago Area Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching. Lynette has been the Director of the Center for City Schools in the Urban Institute at National Louis University and Assistant Professor for the past 19 years. This non-profit organization focuses their efforts on school renewal projects helping to develop classroom communities where best practices, active learning and collaboration enrich all.  

Lynette’s consulting work concentrates on teacher effectiveness helping to develop classrooms where best practices, active learning and teaching for understanding enrich all. She guides teachers to create thinkers and learners within their content area by focusing on interactive reading and thinking strategies to enhance literacy development.  This comprehension strategy instruction with non-fiction text engages both teacher and student in the work. 

She has presented at a variety of national conferences and has worked with many school districts throughout the nation for the past twenty-six years.  She holds a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction and earned a Doctorate Degree in Adult Education from National Louis University where her dissertation focused on high achieving teachers.
