Summer 2018

Dear Adjunct Colleagues,

As part of NLU’s commitment to helping our students achieve their goals, we continue to improve our processes for improving student retention and academic success. Creating a flexible, coherent and timely approach to this work is increasingly important as we approach the launch of the Undergraduate College and the acquisition of Kendall College. The recent adoption of the EAB platform for predictive analytics provides us with significant new tools and information to support student intervention and retention efforts. Careful monitoring of student attendance and academic challenges allows us to target the provision of highly proactive wraparound support to students where it is most needed and meaningful.

At the heart of the retention work across all programs in the University is the important collaboration between faculty, advisors, and our student academic support services (tutoring, TAP preparation, admissions testing, and student accommodations/ADA). To facilitate greater collaboration between advising and student academic support services, the academic support service providers will move to the Academic Advising area effective July 1st. We believe this will also facilitate an easier and stronger process for partnering with program faculty and college leadership to coordinate services to students and increase our retention and completion rates.

The Learning Support staff will be led by Courtney Bondi, who will add this function to her role as Director of Advising.  Thanks and appreciation are due to our Library and Learning Support faculty and staff for the foundational work they have done to organize support interventions for our students.  Though the academic learning support staff are moving over to advising, I am confident that the bonds forged through their working relationships with LLS faculty and staff will remain strong.

Questions?  Please contact Courtney ( ) or Steve Neer ( ), if you would like additional information.

As we make these changes and improvements, I would like to pause to thank the entire NLU community for your commitment and your continued work to help our students achieve their goals and dreams.

Alison R. Hilsabeck, Ph.D.

Provost and Chief Academic Officer

National Louis University Spotlight

We would like to announce Judy Hultberg’s promotion to Assistant Vice Provost of Scheduling and Contracts. Judy comes to this position after having been responsible for administrative operations including scheduling and contracts as Assistant Dean within CPSA for a number of years. Judy, in collaboration with leadership from other administrative units across the university will establish processes and procedures that lead to improvements in scheduling and staffing of courses and the issuance of adjunct and overload contracts.

This work will focus on strategic scheduling to best meet the needs of NLU’s student population and to ensure that all students have a predictable path to degree as well as establishing processes for scheduling and contracts that are consistent across the institution. Judy has already begun leading a cross-university team to develop a plan and implementation timeline for this work. As of July 1, some staff shifted from the colleges to serve on a centralized team, under Judy’s leadership, responsible for scheduling and staffing courses and issuing contracts across the university. Judy’s expertise will be invaluable in assisting the University to continuously improve processes and efficiency, and we are excited to welcome her in this new role.
