WELCOME TO THE ADJUNCT BULLETIN

Dear Colleagues,

Flexibility and convenience are primary concerns for many of our students. Providing the ability to achieve academic and career goals while balancing other obligations is something we have always strived to do for our students. To enhance the National Louis University focus on these objectives, I am pleased to announce The Weekend Center at NLU.

The Weekend Center at NLU provides community, convenience and connection. Students learn among a community of leaders who are focused on acquiring knowledge, advancing their career, and building valuable connections. Designed with time built in for students to get to know their peers, the Weekend Center gives students an expanded network of professionals to help them on their career path.

Students will attend an interactive and engaging face-to-face class one Saturday a month while completing the balance of coursework online. This class structure enables them to meet their goals in a convenient, focused way.

The initial offerings will include programs in both College of Professional Studies and Advancement and National College of Education. The programs are:

  • Administration and Supervision (M.Ed.)
  • Curriculum and Instruction with Advanced Professional Specialization (M.Ed.)
  • Teaching and Learning with major in Postsecondary Teaching (Ed.D.)
  • Health Services Administration (MHA)
  • Human Services Management (M.S.)
  • Human Resource Management and Development (M.S.)
  • Written Communication (M.S.)

Kalissa Smith, a student in our M.Ed. Educational Leadership program which already offers a weekend option, shared what it means to her and her family to be able to attend weekend classes.

“As a busy working mom of three, I was looking for a program that would have the least amount of impact on our daily lives throughout the week. The format of one weekend per month allowed my husband and I to plan ahead for the 18 months of the program. While I had some late nights of online work after putting our kids to bed throughout the week, the flexible structure of the program was more manageable for our busy family schedule. I was grateful that the professors were supportive and understanding throughout the program and assignments kept the learning relevant and engaging!”

The Weekend Center will enable us to expand our reach to students seeking quality, flexible programs. It is just one more example of how we are committed to putting the needs of our students, and their families, first and foremost. As part of the launch for The Weekend Center, an information session at Lisle is planned for Saturday, May 19, 2018 from 10:00am to Noon.

Sincerely,

Nivine Megahed

National Louis University Spotlight

Michael Carr joined NLU as Vice Provost in January. He brings over 20 years of higher ed experience to NLU. Prior to joining NLU, Michael was Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs at Oakton Community College.

In this role, Michael was responsible for overseeing large-scale initiatives, which impact student success as well as assess program effectiveness.  His work included forming working groups from multiple departments across campus to ensure effective implementation.

In addition, he was elected Vice President for the National Council for Instructional Administrators (NCIA), which has a mission of providing national leadership in emerging and future instructional issues and trends.

In his role of Vice Provost of Academic Programs and Faculty Development, Michael will oversee processes such as program review and faculty professional development.  He chairs the new product group, which is charged to assess the university portfolio and identify curricular growth opportunities.  Given his experience, Michael adopts a collaborative leadership style, which leverages collective intelligence and ensures analysis from all perspectives.

Michael has 2 daughters, Mia and Gabriella.  Mia is in 7th grade and is the athlete of the family.  Gabriella, 12, is in 6th grade.  She is the artist of the family and loves to sing and cook.  She is excited about the National Louis and Kendall integration (she is hoping her father will pay for some cooking classes).  Michael’s wife, Claudia, is a women’s health nurse practitioner who provides health care in community based clinics throughout the city.
