June 2018

Dear Adjunct Colleagues,

As we complete another academic year, I would like to express my gratitude to you for all you have done for our students and for the NLU community over the past year.  We hope teaching at NLU has been a satisfying and fruitful experience. To that end, we continually work to better understand and address the needs of all of our community members. It can be challenging to gain information on these issues from all of you, given your busy lives and your commitments outside of NLU.

NLU is growing in recognition as an institution that is on the move. Just last week, the former Executive Director of Postsecondary Education from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Daniel Greenstein, gave a shout out to NLU in an article in Inside Higher Education. He stated that NLU has leveraged its existing strengths, history and ties to various communities and turned itself into an “exemplar of what higher education can and really ought to look like in the 21st century.”

There are so many good things happening at NLU for which our community should be proud. I’ve only highlighted a few. We are making progress to turn our institution around and make it a stronger, highly respected and sustainable institution. These things take time and with each step we also take measures to improve circumstances for all of our stakeholders. This year, our revenue grew as did the associated costs of delivering our programs and services. However, our revenue did not grow as much as we had expected and as a result we have been very thoughtful and careful with spending in the latter half of the year. While this precludes us from providing an additional TIAA-CREF match, we are still budgeting a merit pool for our community for next year including an increase for our adjunct faculty.

Starting in the upcoming Fall term, we will be increasing our adjunct and overload pay rate from $2,451 for a three semester course to $2,750, a 12% increase as an effort to address compensation compression.

Thank you all again for all your hard work and dedicated support of our students and this institution. Together and collectively we are making a meaningful impact on many lives.
