Pres. Megahed issues message in advance of Van Dyke trial verdict

National Louis University President Nivine Megahed, Ph.D. shares the following message with the NLU faculty, staff and students encouraging sensitivity, and to find healthy and peaceful ways to share their perspectives in response to the verdict of the trial of Chicago Police Officer Van Dyke.

Dear NLU Community,

As a nation we are facing some of the most divisive rhetoric and inequity we have seen in decades. More than ever, we seem to be living in two Americas that are very polarized in values and ideology – a country where not all individuals feel safe in their homes and their neighborhoods.  We are facing many systemic issues that undermine equity, respect, and opportunity, leaving many in our nation feeling marginalized, scared, and forgotten.

This rhetoric, inequity, and polarization is being played out in our city as the trial of police officer Jason Van Dyke, who is charged with murdering Laquan McDonald, winds toward its conclusion.  Moreover, this trial underscores the deep sense of inequity and injustice that our African American community feels at this time in our city and nation.  Emotions will run high when the trial reaches its conclusion, and we encourage you to find peaceful and healthy ways to share your perspective and engage civically in ways that promote positive change. We have notified faculty that when the verdict is announced, they should be prepared to take a break from classroom work to allow for a few moments of conversation support in class or within the atrium on the Chicago campus where we will convene as a community. We have arranged for students to talk with counselors from Skylight Counseling Center by emailing counseling@nl.edu, and we will plan sessions in which NLU community members can voice their thoughts and concerns, and where we can continue as a community to find ways to be a positive force that addresses systemic issues of inequity and injustice.  The meeting schedule will be communicated in the next few days.

We are committed to maintaining and supporting a safe, inclusive, and peaceful atmosphere on our campus.  If there are areas that become unsafe across our city as a result of the verdict in the Laquan McDonald trial, we will be sending out regular communication with information about unrest in affected areas so that you may be aware of it and remain safe. If there is any need for campus closure, it will be published on our website, posted on the Emergency Closing Center and announced in our emergency text system and more information on each can be found at the following website: nl.edu/emergency.

If you notice issues that we as a University should be aware of or to report a safety concern, you should call one of the following campus security desks:

  • Chicago Michigan Avenue Campus – Ext. 3333 or (312) 261-3333
  • Chicago Goose Island Campus – (312) 752-2445
  • Lisle – Ext. 4444 or (630) 874-4444
  • Skokie – Ext. 2222 or (224) 233-2222
  • Wheeling – Extension 5555 or (847) 947-5555
  • Elgin – Ext. 8080 or (847) 905-8080

More than ever, institutions like NLU must stand up as exemplars of the founding values of this nation, demonstrating respect for our shared humanity and advancing our work to promote a safe and equitable world.  Our focus on valuing every human being, regardless of who they are, and where they come from is paramount.  Our belief that every individual deserves an opportunity to get a great education, live in a safe environment, and feel valued and respected is core.   Respect for diverse thoughts, ideas, and backgrounds empowers us to be a strong and vibrant community where we can work together to improve any situation. In fact, we are very proud of the many members of our community including our alumni, who already focus on promoting healing, respect, and social and racial equity.

Together, we must work to be an example of how communities can overcome inequity and injustice.   At National Louis University we are committed to reinforcing the value of our shared humanity and the power of our collective and individual voices to improve lives and find peaceful solutions to the most difficult issues.

Sincerely,

Nivine Megahed, Ph.D.
President
