President Megahed issues message in response to DACA news

On September 7, 2017, National Louis University President Nivine Megahed, Ph.D., shared the following communication with the NLU community in response to news regarding the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

Dear NLU Community,

In a move that will put into question the fate of nearly one million young immigrants in this country, the U.S. Attorney General announced Tuesday the March 5, 2018, termination of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Although Congress may now attempt to pass legislation granting legal status to this group known as Dreamers, the outcome is very uncertain, and that uncertainty is causing confusion and anxiety for our students, their families and the higher education community as a whole.

The National Louis University community fully supports DACA students. We value the welfare of students from all backgrounds and nations and we will advocate for their rights to stay in this country and continue their studies in a safe and productive environment; and we will work to support proposed legislation that will extend support for DACA students.

During this stressful time as the Administration and Congress sort out the options our DACA students will have for their futures, we wanted to convey our support and some helpful information.

  • To help ease the turmoil many are going through, NLU is offering six free sessions of counseling to students. Email  counseling@nl.edu.
  • The university is planning to offer speakers, information and resources for DACA students. Likewise, we will keep faculty and staff apprised of how they can best support DACA students, and any news or developments.
  • The University will continue to neither ask about immigration status nor provide information about a student and will protect privacy to the fullest extent of the law.
  • Over the coming weeks, NLU will be formulating other ways to aid and support DACA students.

We will be contacting our Congressional representatives in writing or by phone to urge them to write DACA protections into law.  We urge all members of our community who feel similarly to do the same.  You can find your House representative contact information at www.house.gov/representatives and senators at www.senate.gov/senators/contact/.

NLU supports the Illinois Trust Act, which limits Illinois law enforcement from cooperating with ICE and prevents them from detaining people based on their immigration status. Gov. Rauner signed the Trust Act into law on Monday.

We encourage lawmakers to find a just and compassionate solution that supports those with DACA status to stay in the only country they have ever really known.  As a nation of immigrants, we know that newcomers bring energy and ideas that keep our country innovating and inventing. Our Dreamers are filled with incredible potential, and we want to see them graduate so they can begin to fulfill it here in the U.S. and benefit us all.

To all of our affected students, please know that you are a member of a community that cares about you, a university where you are welcome and respected. Do not hesitate to ask for assistance; we are here for you.

Sincerely,

Nivine Megahed, Ph.D.
President
