Bring Real Change to the Children of Chicago:
Train for Successful Teaching
in the Chicago Public Schools

Do you have a passion to teach and bring success to the children and teenagers in Chicago’s highest need public schools? If your answer is yes, we invite you to explore and apply to our premier teacher preparation program.

The AUSL/NLU Urban Teacher Residency

In 2001, the Academy for Urban School Leadership (AUSL) partnered with the National College of Education (NCE) at National-Louis University (NLU) to change the way children are taught in the classrooms of some of Chicago's highest-need communities. The Urban Teacher Residency training program they developed is nationally acclaimed and hailed as a model of excellence by educators throughout the country.

The AUSL/NLU Urban Teacher Residency is an intensive 12-month, full-time, paid program for teacher preparation, certification, and a Master's degree. New college graduates, career-changers, and newly certified teachers with a desire to receive further training for urban settings are all eligible. Following the training year, graduates commit to teach in Chicago Public Schools for at least four years.

What the AUSL/NLU Urban Teacher Residency program offers you:

Our Graduates are hired. And they stay hired.
90% of our 2010 graduates were hired as CPS teachers. Many graduates are employed as teachers in urban schools managed by AUSL. And 85% of the teachers who have graduated from our program over the last nine years are still working in education, mostly in CPS.

Our residents get exceptional financial support.
During your training year, you will receive a $30,000 training salary AND a $5,350 AmeriCorps Education Award AND a deep discount on your masters degree tuition.  Graduates who are hired as CPS teachers with a masters degree will earn over $52,000 annually plus benefits.

Our residents get outstanding training in the classroom: a full year with a mentor teacher in a Chicago Public school.
Learning how to teach from inside a classroom with daily support from an experienced mentor teacher makes a residency different from any other teacher preparation program. You get the knowledge, skills, and practice you need to be thoroughly ready to be a superior urban educator.

Our residents earn a Masters degree and Illinois teaching certification in an accelerated one-year program from a leader in teacher preparation, National-Louis University
Training teachers since 1886, the National College of Education at NLU is widely known in the education community. NLU has worked with AUSL since 2001, and now offers customized one-year masters programs designed to complement the teaching residency.

Be part of success.
From our highly selective residency admissions process (9% of our applicants were chosen for our 2010-11 cohort of residents) to our growing network of AUSL-managed schools, we are focused on success for Chicago’s school children. And our results show it – students in our schools achieve.
