Fine Arts

Program Description:

Do you love the Art Institute but aren’t always sure you really understand the art? Would an insider view of the symphony or the opera deepen your musical appreciation? Do you want to develop your musical skills or learn to evaluate the films you enjoy with a critic’s eye? Are you interested in enhancing your own creativity by knowing more about theatre?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then a major or minor in one of the areas of Fine Arts may be just right for you. Choose from three areas of study: Art, Music and Theatre/Film. Art and Theatre/Film Studies can be a major or minor concentration. Music is available as a minor. Art can also be an area of concentration for Elementary Education majors. For more information on this option, view the Fine Arts curriculum requirements.

How You Will Learn:

NLU is nationally ranked by U.S. News and World Report for offering small classes—and nearly all of your art, music and theatre/film classes will have a maximum enrollment of 20. Art and music courses, as appropriate, are offered in studio spaces.

What You Will Learn:

  • How to appreciate and reflect critically on various art forms.
  • How to sharpen your presentation, written and oral communication skills.
  • How to use your knowledge of the fine arts to gain a broader understanding of historical and cultural traditions.

Where You Can Take the Program:

Online and at NLU’s campuses in Chicago, Elgin, Lisle, Skokie (North Shore) and Wheeling.
