Foreign Language (Minor)

Program Description:

Knowledge of one or more foreign languages is becoming increasingly important in our global society. The NLU foreign language minor is designed to prepare you to apply your skills in a variety of settings, from working with clients and colleagues to communicating with family and friends. This minor is particularly well suited for those of you for whom the foreign language is also your native language—and for those of you who have an interest in the nature and structure of either Spanish or Chinese.

How You Will Learn:

NLU is nationally ranked by U.S. News and World Report for offering small classes—and so nearly all of your classes will have a maximum enrollment
of 20. Emphasis is placed on active participation—and you will be applying the four language skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) at each class session, with the help of innovative teaching methodologies.

What You Will Learn:

  • An enhanced awareness of our global society.
  • How to understand the universal principles and diversity of linguistic and cultural expression.
  • How to apply the skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening in a foreign language to a variety of contexts.
  • How to apply grammatical knowledge to improve your oral and written communication.
  • How to understand the impact, and apply the complexities and subtleties, of the foreign language in a variety of sociocultural situations.

Where You Can Take the Program:

At NLU’s campuses in Chicago and Skokie (North Shore).
