United We Serve is President Obama's initiative encourage all Americans to participate in our nation's recovery and renewal by serving in our communities. There are many ways to get involved. America's new foundation will be built one community at a time, and it starts with you.
Learn about the Kennedy Serve America Act, which reauthorizes and expands national service programs administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency created in 1993. NLU sponsors the Americorps*VISTA program and currently has a VISTA associate on staff to develop and promote the Civic Engagement Center.
Campus Compact is a national organization which supports civic engagement in higher education.
NLU is a member of Illinois Campus Compact, which is a coalition of 40 Illinois colleges and universities under the Campus Compact umbrella. ILCC supports not only the civic development of students, but the campus as an active and engaged member of its community.
Prairie State Service-Learning Leader schools in the Chicago area are leading the way in civic engagement at primary and secondary schools. It is with the help of these schools that we foster civic engagement for the future generation.
Service-learning books and other resources are now available for faculty use. These resources are housed in the five Chicago-area campus libraries. NLU faculty may check them out as two-week reserve items.
