Academic advising at National Louis University is a partnership. It is a relationship built on trust, respect and a shared desire for success. As your academic advisor, it is our responsibility to ensure that you fully understand all graduation requirements and academic policies, to encourage and guide you down the right degree path, to connect you to student services, to maintain confidentiality, listen closely, communicate clearly and be there when you need us. But that’s only half of the relationship. What are your responsibilities as an advisee?
1. Be an active learner
- Talk to your advisor about your personal goals, your values and your interests
- Be honest about your strengths and weaknesses
- Take assessment tests in math and writing
- Seek help in areas where you need extra assistance
- If you have a question or concern, seek out your advisor
2. Meet regularly with your advisor
- Make an appointment with your advisor every term
- Come prepared with a credit evaluation and program checklist
- Bring a list of classes that you would like to take
- Prepare a list of questions you want to ask your advisor
- If you want to take a course outside of NLU, bring a full course description
- Respect your advisor’s time by being punctual
3. Take responsibility for your NLU education
- Check your NLU e-mail account regularly for important updates
- Keep track of registration deadlines
- Register for and successfully complete all required courses
- Understand any program requirements beyond required coursework
- Read and understand the policies and procedures outlined in the Student Guidebook
