Impact of Federal Sequester

The budget cuts that went into effect on Friday, March 1, 2013 have resulted in changes in the loan fees for Stafford and PLUS loans.

Loans that will have a first disbursement after March 1, 2013 will have increased fees. The new loan origination fees are:

  • Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Stafford Loans: increase from 1% to 1.051%
  • Direct Parent PLUS and Graduate PLUS Loans: increase from 4% to 4.204%

The Department of Education will be contacting all students whom these changes impact. They have asked institutions to continue to originate loans with the prior origination fees of 1% for Stafford and 4% for PLUS loans until further notice. The Department of Education will work with borrowers when necessary to collect the increased fees that are a result of the sequester.

Please note that these changes only impact students whose first disbursement of a Stafford or PLUS loan is after March 1, 2013.

What is a Student Loan?
A student loan is a low-interest loan extended by the federal government to help you pay for your education. To qualify for a loan, you must be enrolled at least half-time in classes at National Louis University. Like any other loan, student loans need to be paid back over time with interest. Unlike other loans, you don’t have to start making payments immediately. For most student loans, you start making payments six months after you graduate or stop taking classes at least half-time.

Types of Student Loans
The U.S. Department of Education offers a number of different student loans designed to meet different education and financial needs. Learn about your loan options below. You can also visit the direct student loans FAQs page for more information and contact the Office of Student Finance with any questions:

  • Federal Direct Subsidized Loan – The amount of this loan is based on your demonstrated financial need. It’s called a subsidized loan because the government will pay all interest on the loan until six months after you graduate or leave your program.
  • Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan – This loan is a supplemental loan for students who don’t qualify for need-based aid or for whom need-based aid isn’t sufficient to cover all educational expenses. The loan is called unsubsidized because the government does not pay any of your interest.
  • Federal Perkins Loan – This low-interest loan is reserved for undergraduate or graduate students with exceptional financial need. Unlike other federal loans, a portion of the Perkins Loan is funded by NLU. The grace period for making loan payments is nine months after graduation.
  • Federal Direct PLUS Loan for Parents – If you are under 24 years of age, unmarried and listed as a dependent on your parents’ tax return, then your parents can apply for a low-interest loan to help cover your education expenses.
  • Federal Direct PLUS Loan for Graduate and Professional Degree Students – If you are no longer a dependent of your parents, you can apply for your own PLUS loan to cover additional education expenses.  Approval for a PLUS loan is based on your credit history, not financial need.
