A: To start the certification process, complete and submit the Request for Initial Certification by Entitlement in your NLU Portal account home page

Q: Do I send a money order or cashier's check to the NLU Certification Office?

A: No. The cashier's check is for ISBE. This is only required if an applicant wishes to visit a Regional Office of Education (ROE) & submit his/her application. If you follow directions to apply for the certification online you pay the fee using a credit card & no money order or cashier's check is required at all.

Q: What happens at the NLU Certification Office?

A: The certification coordinator reviews each application to verify that the applicant has passed all required ISBE exams, completed the program requirements, has a zero balance & is a degree applicant for graduation - required for type 04 & type 10 certifications. Once all requirements are met & degree is awarded - required for type 04 & type 10 certs - the certification coordinator will electronically notify ISBE of an applicants' entitlement eligibility. The applicant will receive directions to apply online via the Educator Certification System (ECS) via an e-mail. The original application, signed & stamped, with directions on the final steps to complete the application process, will be returned to the applicant in the mail.

Q: What happens when the NLU Certification Office returns the application to me? Isn't my certificate issued already?

A: The applicant should follow the directions for either applying online via the ECS system, taking application & transcripts to an ROE office or by mailing application & transcripts directly to Springfield. The quickest way to apply is online & the certificate number will be immediately available. Keep the original application for your records if you apply online. Sending the application to a ROE office or Springfield to process will take longer to process.

Q: Do I have to send all my transcripts?

A: Yes. ISBE requires that all undergraduate and graduate transcripts be sent to Springfield. If a transcript was already submitted, another does not need to be. A final transcript showing your degree conferred date should be sent to ISBE.

Q: Who can I call if I have other questions or issues about the certification process?
