Message from the President

Dear Friends,

The new academic year is off to a great start at National Louis, and I’m delighted to introduce this refreshed magazine to you, our valued community of alumni and friends. Among the many aspects of our University that make us proud is the leadership our alumni demonstrate in their professions and communities. Thank you for all you do.

In keeping with the heritage of access and belief in the transformative impact of education that has defined our institution since its birth, we continue to innovate to meet the changing needs of learners today. In this issue of the magazine, you’ll learn about NLU’s “Education to Employment” initiative, launched to serve veterans and others as they strive to fulfill their goals of obtaining college degrees and new professional opportunities.

I have been privileged in the past months to meet many outstanding men and women dedicated to military service and to helping veterans transition to civilian life with all the support they deserve.  I’m heartened by the growing recognition among institutions of higher learning that these outstanding Americans have distinctive educational needs that we must be prepared to meet.

In September I was honored to co-chair the steering committee for an event that brought together almost twenty university presidents from across metro Chicago to sign a collective pledge of commitment to student veterans. This event was sponsored by the Student Veterans of America, the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Joining Forces, the Council for Adult and Experiential Education, and the McCormick Foundation, a leading funding organization in veterans’ affairs.  In fact, earlier in 2012 the McCormick Foundation awarded NLU $750 thousand dollars in support of our “Education to Employment” initiative.

This philanthropic support, the opportunity to lead conversations among education leaders, and the talent and commitment of our NLU colleagues led by Brigadier General and NLU Assistant Professor  Stephen Curda, all  reinforce my conviction that NLUs is right where it should be in meeting the most vital educational issues of our day.

    NLU’s Chicago campus on South Michigan Avenue occupies five floors of the historic Peoples Gas Building. This landmark building, across the street from the Art Institute of Chicago and Grant Park, is easily accessible by train, bus and car and is surrounded by restaurants, parking lots/garages and shops.

  • ELGIN

    Conveniently located in a fast-growing business district off I-90 and Route 31, NLU Elgin features 10 classrooms with high-tech media equipment; a computer lab with high-speed Internet access; two conference rooms; and comfortable student lounges. Parking is free at this recently remodeled and upgraded teaching site, which now includes wireless Internet access.

  • NORTH SHORE

    Opened in the summer of 2006, NLU North Shore at Skokie is a state-of-the-art modern campus located just off the Edens Expressway near the Old Orchard Shopping Center. The campus includes 44 wireless classrooms equipped with high-tech media equipment; four computer labs with high-speed Internet access, including a walk-in lab in the library; six conference rooms; a public café for beverages and snacks; a student welcome center; a library for research and study; and multiple, comfortable student lounge areas.

  • LISLE

  • WHEELING

    Located in one of Chicago's major northwest suburbs, the newly renovated NLU Wheeling includes 20 classrooms with high-tech media equipment, four conference rooms, four computer labs with high-speed Internet access, large student lounge areas with wireless capabilities and interactive video capabilities, and an extensive research library. The site also houses the university library research collection.

  • FLORIDA (TAMPA)

    Established in 1988 and located in one of the city's major business districts, NLU's Tampa campus serves students in 13 counties in central Florida.     NLU's Milwaukee campus has a proud history of serving graduate students in education in southeastern Wisconsin. Nearly one in five certified Wisconsin teachers looks to NLU for graduate education programs – more than any other university in the state. In addition to classrooms with high-tech media equipment, the campus offers a state-of-the-art computer lab with wireless Internet access and an extensive IDS research library.
