National Louis University offers students looking for a teacher preparation program the opportunity to simultaneously obtain both a master's degree in education and Illinois teacher certification through our Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) degree. The curriculum is designed for students with bachelor’s degrees in fields other than education and emphasizes entrance requirements to the teaching profession.
Our Teaching Degree Programs
NLU's M.A.T. options are available in:
- M.A.T. in Early Childhood Education (Type 04 certification)
- M.A.T. in Elementary Education (Type 03 certification)
- M.A.T. in Secondary Education (Type 09 certification)
- M.A.T. in Special Education (LBSI certification)
Why NLU’s Education Master's Degree Programs
With our education master's degrees, you’ll learn best practices in the classroom and develop the creative, organizational and assessment skills necessary to become a successful teacher.
At NLU we understand that students have busy lives outside the classroom, so we make our programs flexible to fit your schedule. Students can take full- or part-time, daytime or evening classes. We make obtaining teaching degrees convenient, faster and easier.
Preparing You for Teacher Certification
M.A.T. applicants must prove that they've taken and passed the Test of Academic Proficiency (TAP) within the past five years. If you still need to take the TAP, NLU offers applicants TAP study workshops to help you prepare for this important test on your road to attaining a teaching certificate.
Admission Requirements
In addition to NLU standard admission requirements, students enrolling in Master of Arts in Teaching programs must meet additional requirements that vary from program to program.
