Biography:

Beyond teaching courses and conducting research I am active in multiple professional associations. I chair the Public Policy Committee of the Society for Community Research and Action (SCRA), Division 27 of the American Psychological Association. I am the Treasurer for the Chicagoland Evaluation Association (CEA), the local affiliate of the American Evaluation Association, and am co-chair of the University Partnership Working Group and serve on the executive Committee of the Consortium to Lower Obesity in Chicago Children (CLOCC), a broad-based network of participants and organizations confronting the childhood obesity epidemic by promoting healthy and active lifestyles for children throughout the Chicago metropolitan area.

I regularly consult with local nonprofits specializing in needs assessment,program evaluation, community building, and collaborative community research. Recent clients have included public school systems, museum and art institutions, social service agencies, and community development organizations.

Research and Interests:

My research and advocacy interests involve promoting healthy communities and increasing civic engagement and prosocial behavior of individuals and groups within communities. More specifically, this has led me to a varied range of research topics including: using policy change to improve community health, obesity prevention, urban education for students with disabilities, substance abuse aftercare, affordable housing,access to healthcare, access to healthy food, and violence prevention and intervention programs for youth.
