Biography:
Diane Nititham-Tunney completed her MA in Social and Cultural Foundations in Education in 2006 and her PhD in Sociology from University College Dublin, Ireland in 2010. Her dissertation research focused on the intersecting dynamics of diaspora, migration and dislocation as they shape the construction of “home” for Filipinas in Ireland. Some of her work has been published in Translocations: The Irish Migration, Race and Social Transformation Review, Malaysian Journal of Economic Studies and Immigration and the Irish Experience of European and Global Transformation (Ashgate, 2011). In 2012, she received the Recognition for Exemplary Undergraduate Teaching Award in the Department of Sociology, University of Illinois at Chicago, where she is a Visiting Lecturer. Her research and creative work are rooted in her experiences of growing up as Filipina/Thai American in the United States and residing in Italy and Thailand, and Ireland. Her motivations stem from the process of exploring one’s identity, challenging unspoken assumptions and tapping into the pedagogical content of self-inquiry. Her current research explores how notions of Irish identity and the Irish diaspora in Chicago are created, sustained and enacted through the consumption of food, drink, and celebratory activities.
